Treasured Passages
by Martha Rose Woodward
This is a story about a successful “Momprenuer,“(a mom that is also an entrepreneur)Whitney Biggs, a new mom who came up with an unique way to save family keepsakes. Biggs founded Treasured Passages, a new company that specializes in helping people create keepsake books for mothers and daughters, sisters, friends, and couples. She is a Knoxville resident and UT graduate, who went into business with Sabra Miller, also a graduate of UT, who is originally from Nashville, and Janice Maples, Sabra’s mother, also from Nashville.
Biggs lived through two events that changed her life: her mother’s sudden death from cancer when Biggs was pregnant with her first child, and later, her own bout with the disease.
After her mother’s death, Biggs learned that the only keepsakes she had from her mother were those created by chance from mementos like lists and notes she discovered in her mother’s old desk. She also realized she had no keepsakes from herself to leave for her own small children. These findings made Biggs and her friends realize that “who we are and how we want to connect and be remembered needs to be our priorities.”
Treasured Passage’s Letter Books feature guided writing ideas and come with more than forty vintage note cards. In the Mother Daughter Letter Book, for example, each lady writes to the other about certain topics or themes and then tucks her notes in the book for the other to read.
Biggs says the Treasured Passages products are top quality and “the Letter Book is more than a scrapbook. It’s an heirloom. From the vintage cards pullout storage drawer, to the heavy-stock pages and hardbound cover, our books are built to be shared for generations.”
Biggs said, “In this age of instant communications that also instantly disappear, Treasured Passages provides a way both to enrich relationships as well as to preserve memories, family recipes, hopes, and even more important, our own voices.”
Inspired by a presentation Biggs and Miller gave to the Phi Mu sorority at UT (they were Phi Mus), they launched a formal paid internship program at UT and other campuses to sell their Letter Books.
Bigg’s says her life story is about finding out about putting first what matters most: each other.
