A kind of spark
okay so, I’ve recently come across this show/book, and like kajsjwosjsjdnd I love it, I finished the book yesterday,I got goosebumps multiple times while reading it, and teared up yesterday while starting to watch the show (pirated but shhhh) because one of the sisters was stimming the way I do. I really love Addie, she’s an icon and I see lots of myself in her :)) I HIGHLY recommend reading and watching the show, it’s really good and a nice let’s say comfort show, this was also one of the few books I’ve read wiht like my self and not an audiobook (I rely heavily on audiobooks, and reading somthing myself was fun) so yeah, REALLY good book and series
Parallels in A Kind of Spark s1 v s2
I feel like I havent seen anyone talking about this on here so I thought I would do it! There will be spoilers ahead so stop reading if you haven't watched season 2 yet.
I loved the parallels between season 1 and season 2 of AKOS, it felt really thought through and I noticed several moments in partiuclar which I thought were really special. The main one I noticed was Emily finding the pages of ripped up books from the bookshop and following the trail to the wrecked bookshop, just like Addie did in seaon 1 when Emily ripped up her book. I felt that Emily had finally really understood what she'd done to Addie in season 1.
The next one I loved was Keedie at the party in both s1 and s2. In S1 she was masking a lot and trying really hard to seem neurotypical. Even though the music is too loud she pretends it's okay but then gets really overwhelmed and needs to go home. In S2, she visibly stims and then puts on some ear defenders and keeps partying! We love to see the growth.
And finally, I'm not sure if this is really a parallel but I saw some behind the scenes things about how costumes were chosen with a lot of care and in season one Keedie wears mostly blues and cooler colours and Nina wears greens and pinks. But in S2 they both seem to wear each other's colours which could show that they are back to being really close again, unlike in S1 where they have fallen out.
I love this show so much! And I love seeing the authentic autism representation and this show is just everything!
"When I heard what was done to these women, right here in Juniper, it hurt my heart. That they were killed, merely for being different or weird. Different is good. We need all kinds of difference in the world [...]. My autism can make things difficult. But on the days where I'm finding electricity in things, seeing the details that others might not, I like it a lot. I like myself, the way I am. A lot."
Do You Know This (canon) Autistic Character?
Addie Darrow from A Kind Of Spark by Elle McNicoll (book and TV)
Yes, I know her and see them as autistic
Yes, I know her, but I don't see them as autistic
I've heard of her
I don't know her, but they seem autistic
I don't know her, but they don't seem autistic
I don't know her
Propaganda:
I love how Addie Darrow always wears soft overalls, and every pair has a different cute patch on them.
Also, Bonnie. We need more depictions of autistic people who've been burned by an ableist world.
