it would be really nice if one day people learned how to be anti-Zionist without being antisemitic
it's just silly to take the history of a situation or the people in a situation into context? oh how very white imperalist of you caitlin johnstone. what's that saying about people who ignore history?
i am NOT defending Israel with this statement but no, that's not how far back you need to go. again, what Israel is doing is WRONG. FULL STOP.
BUT the people of Israel didn't just wake up and decide to be Zionists one day. you would have to go all the way back to the Neo-Assyrian empire to see where it really began. in 720 BCE the Kingdom of Israel. if you've ever read the bible then you should remember Canaan and the Canaanites. this took place in Canaan. a large swath of the population was forcibly displaced from their homes. next the neo babylonian empire defeated the neoassyrians. there was really a king nebuchadnezzar. he is part of the historical record and he had jeresuleum destroyed bc of a series of revolts and more people were displaced and forced to leave
... does this sound familiar?
AGAIN I AM NOT SAYING WHAT ISRAEL IS DOING IS RIGHT.
but if people hadn't been doing the same fucking shit to the people of israel bc they're antisemitic bastards then we likely wouldn't be in this position in the first place
when doing your research, don't just go back to when that conflict started. go back to the beginning of the people. we know from history that people break and revolt when pushed too far. the problem with generational grudes is they can never truly be won in a way that will satisfy all sides. at some point this started with the desire to protect oneself and one's people. it escalated and now the hunted has become the hunter
the real culrpit is the war machine. because guess what you find when you go back in the history of assyrian empire? they were also defending themselves from people attacking their kingdom
in a way, it's very much like animal farm
(for clarity, i did all of this research myself at the beginning of the year bc i wanted to understand how this started. i ended up in tears. imagine being chased out of where you live for 2700 years. as a white women in america i can't even begin to comprehend the amount of generational trauma that would cause)
Israel needs to be stopped, but what happened to cause Israel to be pushed to the breaking point ALSO MUST STOP. there will always be another netanyahu. there will always be another trump. there will always be another alexander the great, another napoleon, another churchill. until the system is defeated the system will continue to do what it has always done: reward those with power and wealth and fuck the rest of us
this war on the masses cannot be won with protest signs or votes and it cannot be won by ignoring our history. those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it
doing your research on history to truly understand how something came about is not fucking silly, caitlin. it is a necessary step to decolonizing your mind
