How to Pipe Grass or Fur on Cup Cakes
Are you planning to make some cupcakes for your kids next birthday and are wondering about how to decorate them? You can create some of the most popular, celebrated and the easiest decorations on your cakes and cupcakes with the use of the grass tip.
The grass tip comes with serrated edges that create ridges in the icing. While it might look complicated and tricky, we show you how easy it is to pipe out grass or fur on your cupcakes using this tip. If you are keen on cake decorating, you can learn many more techniques by joining a cake decorating class offered by a baking studio.
The step by step procedure is mentioned below:
Start by fitting the grass tip to the piping bag and fill about ½ of it with icing of medium consistency. Hold the piping bag at an angle of 90 degrees with the tip 1/8 inches above the cupcakes surface.
Apply the right pressure to squeeze out the icing so that it forms a grass. When you have a strand of needed length, pull the tip up and then away. You can form the grass evenly when you stop to squeeze before you pull the piping bag away.
To achieve a natural look, you can at times pull the tip to the left or to the right. You also need to make sure to keep the clusters pretty close so that the cake’s layer is not seen.
You can create the fur in the same way using the same tip. Be it a fur for a lion or any other animal, you can use the right colored icing to achieve the right look.
Decorating your cakes and cupcakes with icing can be a fun task. Though it can be mastered at home with a little guidance, you can become an expert in cake making and cake decorating by taking cake baking classes that are now offered by a number of baking studios in Mumbai.
Our highly-qualified guest tutor gives cake-decorating classes almost every month. Our next class takes place on 21 May, 3-8pm. You will be shown how to paint onto fondant and how to make flowers and wire them, colour them and arrange on the dummy cake. This class is suitable for those with basic skills, including how to cover a dummy with fondant.
The cost is €115 per person or €200 for 2 people. All necessary materials are provided for use in the class, including: dummy, cakeboard, icing, colours, smoothers, brushes & palette, wire. (You are welcome to bring your own tools if you prefer but please discuss in advance to see if we can reduce your cost.)
The class starts at 3.00pm and finishes around 8.00-8.30pm. There will be a 15-minute break, with tea and coffee provided.
Booking must be made no later than 7 May, accompanied by payment of €50 deposit. THE DEPOSIT IS NON-REFUNDABLE, unless the class is cancelled by Craft Heaven.
May Newsletter
I thought this would be a good time to remind everyone that we're always happy to take requests for new products/services/classes. For example, this week I've been asked to get an airbrush kit for cake decorating and I've sourced a few different brands, and of course all the colours as well. We're asked on a regular basis to show piping techniques in our cake-decorating classes. Our in-house tutor, Ana, has already held a couple of piping classes but we're scheduling another one for September ... details to follow. Speaking of classes, see below for details of our next class where Ana will demonstrate covering and decorating a 3-tier cake in an "updated vintage" style on a 1920s flapper theme.
By the way, did you notice the huge price drop in our cake drums? We're now selling them in packs of 5 for an extra 10% discount, but of course you can still buy them singly.
So, enough about cakes, what else is going on. Well, LOADS of new stock has been delivered over the last few weeks, including communion/confirmation toppers for cakes (sorry!) and cards. These are still being uploaded to our website, so keep checking back.
We also got pearls and crystal beads, with a lot more due to arrive in the next few weeks, including seed beads. By popular demand, we're now stocking a small selection of rose gold findings. Again, these will be uploaded to our website as soon as possible, so keep checking.
And finally, have you been following the Stylecraft Lilypond Blanket Crochet Along? You can download the patterns for free from the Stylecraft website every fortnight and it builds into a lovely blanket with lilies. There was a slight hiccup with the blanket being so popular that Stylecraft actually sold out of the yarn in advance so some retailers like myself had to wait for the next delivery. But we now have almost all the necessary colours in stock in both Life DK and Special DK. Once we get that last colour, Craft Heaven will be making up a kit with all the yarn and crochet hooks required, and will offer FREE DELIVERY within Ireland for a limited time.
Follow us on Facebook for almost daily updates on new stock, classes, discounts and any other crafty news we think you'd be interested in, such as...
- Learn how to decorate a 3-tier cake in our weekend workshop, 6-7 June. All materials provided. Click here to book before 24 May.
- Pick of the Month is candymaking supplies - 20% off. Yes, our Pick of the Week has now become Pick of the Month, with discounts ranging from 20% to 40%. No code required, discount is automatically applied.
- This month, proceeds from our Lucky Dip charity category go to the Nepal Earthquake Appeal (We welcome donations of craft or holistic items from our customers, which we then sell for charity.)
Working with Fondant
Well I finally did it. After riding the rollercoaster ride of indecisiveness, I took a fondant cake class. Get this; I even made homemade fondant from marshmallows! Making the fondant and covering the cake was not nearly as challenging as I thought it would be. This does not mean I’m ready to go out and cover a multi-tiered wedding cake, but with practice, I’ll get there.
As part of the class,…
