Richard Foster's 1968 "Round House,"
Wilton, Connecticut, United States,
Also known as the "Circambulant House" or "Rotating House, the Round House is a distinctive modernist architectural masterpiece.
This unique home is engineered to rotate 360 degrees, offering dynamic, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
The house's main living area sits 12 feet off the ground on a central, fixed concrete core. A large, three-ton ball bearing (originally designed for warship gun turrets) allows the entire structure above it to rotate. At its fastest setting, a full rotation takes approximately 45-48 minutes.
Renovation: Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects's firm was specifically commissioned to undertake a deep restoration and interior remodel in 2012. They focused on restoring the exterior to its original condition while modernizing the interior, removing partitions to bring in more light and upgrading the infrastructure for 21st-century living.
