Caleb and the Princess moved closer to each other beneath the shadow of the Wisteria that witnessed their childhoods. He looked down at her longingly while he gently traced the lines of her jaw with his fingers.
Caleb muttered a soft "Princess…" into her ear, as if he was making a desperate prayer to the gods. His will to restrain himself with her was rapidly slipping through his fingers while his oath repeated continuously in his mind.
When Caleb became Captain of the Royal Guard, he vowed his own life to protect the Princess. He fought countless battles and assassins, shielding her from all the dangers that the kingdom could conjure. Countless times he survived the ashes of war rising victorious despite the odds. Yet not once had his victories prepared him for his overwhelming desire for the Princess. His internal struggles grew stronger inside of him every moment that passed between them. Caleb felt the familiar shame and guilt that wanted her only to be his creeping through his veins like wild vines around a tree choking any grain of hope that embedded itself into his heart. Caleb's intense love for the Princess felt like it threatened to consume him completely.
The closeness of the Princess, only moments away from his lips, gave him the realization that for the first time in his life, Caleb knew he was going to lose this fight today. His hand lingered on her skin, gazing into her eyes searching for answers to questions she could never give him.
To Caleb, it seemed as though he was merely another celestial body trapped in her gravitational pull, bound to orbit around her light forever without ever touching her completely. It was so natural for him to love her, but to have her was impossible. She was the star he used to navigate his life. The Princess to him was radiant, untouchable, and destined to illuminate the world around her. Sadly, even if she loved him as fiercely as he loved her, they could never be together. Fate had written their places in the heavens long before either of them were born.
"Y-You know that I cannot grant your wish without consequence," Caleb moved forward until the feeling of her breath ghosted across his lips and nearly stopped his heart.
He waited for her to pull away, to stop him before he went too far caught inbetween his feelings and the obligations of his oath. Instead she leaned in closer. Tentatively, his lips brushed hers questioning his own interpretations of her feelings, only to be met with the same longing. His fingers ran up her back, pressing her against him firmly while the other wrapped around her hair. A soft whimper escaped him as she ran her tongue along the seam of his lips.
