Member Tejada: Given that we’ve seen a net migration decrease and given that the Premier herself called for Alberta’s population to grow at an even faster rate than it already has and given that she called for Red Deer to grow to 1 million people, 10 times its size, and given that she even asked Justin Trudeau to double the numbers on programs with thousands of new immigrants, when will the UCP government take responsibility for their obvious failure to manage health care and education and apologize for their irresponsible scapegoating of immigrants and newcomers?

Mr. Schow: Mr. Speaker, the member is right. An apology is owed but to the public for the calibre, the poor calibre, of opposition that His Majesty has in this Chamber. This is the level of questions that come across here.

Member Tejada: There’s so much that Albertans are begging us to address, and rather than do that and rather than address the issues that plague us, rather than showing up at the table to negotiate and get us a win, the UCP is putting up its dukes and punching in the air at a new Prime Minister and new ministers before they’ve even had lunch. It’s an embarrassment, quite frankly. It does remind me, if you’ll indulge me, of a quote from one of my favourite television shows, Mad Men. I don’t know if anyone remembers that show.

Dr. Elmeligi: Great show.

Member Tejada: Right? One of my favourite characters on that show, Don Draper, has a great quote. Curiously, this show is also set in the ’60s, around the time of the civil rights movement, when folks in the United States were organizing to get the vote and to not be disenfranchised despite the many movements around them to do it. In this quote Don Draper is referring to how entities can manipulate audiences and groups of people away from what they care about and from what they’re facing in the moment by distracting them, and that quote is: if you don’t like what’s being said, change the conversation. This government is certainly trying very hard to change the channel on what Albertans are asking for.

Member Tejada: I’m happy to speak to Bill 204. I will say that I think the only government overreach here is what is proposed in this bill. What this bill does is interfere with and sabotage the work that’s being done by communities calling for national park urban designation. In the long history of this government making sticking it to Trudeau a personality, what this bill proposes is more performative heel-digging as grandstanding when it comes to the federal government.

Ms Renaud: In 2020, I believe it was, the Treasury Board and Finance – well, Community and Social Services; I blame them squarely, but both ministries, let’s say – decided that they were going to change payment dates for people that receive income support and AISH. Traditionally people receive these payments a few days ahead of the first of the month. Now, it’s a little bit chaotic and sometimes a little bit tough to tell when that would be because it was always really different. I’ll admit that it wasn’t a uniform date. It was always a little bit different, particularly in December. It was quite a bit before Christmas, so that would leave a longer period of time into January before people got their payment. Without very much notice at all – I don’t think it could’ve been more than maybe a month and a half at the time; actually, people found out on social media – they were told that their payment dates were going to change. “It’s for your own good,” says the government. “It’s for your own good. We’re doing this because we care about you.”

Mr. Jeremy Nixon: Hear, hear.

Ms Renaud: That’s not true. That is incorrect. The Member for Calgary-Klein thinks it’s a good idea that they changed the payment dates and actually believes, according to his heckle, that they did change the payment dates to help Albertans, when we know it is not true.

Mr. Jeremy Nixon: Colleagues, Albertans are noticing. If you take a moment to remove yourself from this building, the media circus, the petty political nonsense, you will hear Albertans sending messages of approval of the direction of this government. Albertans approve of moving beyond COVID. They approve of our pro-growth, pro-enterprise economic agenda. They approve of our fiscal prudence. The opposition won’t want to hear this, but if an election were held today, the United Conservative Party would be re-elected with a majority. Friends, if we stay the course, if we remain united and we continue to focus on the priorities of Albertans, this momentum will continue through to 2023, and Albertans will reward this government with a renewed mandate to continue to build this province.

Ms Sweet: So I would encourage the government to go back, to really rethink what the future of Alberta is going to be post COVID. What is the economy going to look like? Where will you diversify and invest? How are you going to encourage Albertans to look at, you know, different things and stay in the province, really? I mean, let’s start there.

Mr. Jeremy Nixon: Think more windmills.

Ms Sweet: Well, you know, windmills aren’t bad. They’ve been in Pincher Creek for a really long time, way before us. If the hon. member likes to cut comments, I’d love to see him stand up and actually say something on the record about what he believes diversification in his government would look like instead of just, you know, commenting across the floor because the reality of it is that Albertans are hurting right now. As much as I appreciate that the government likes to think that it’s great to heckle about that, the reality is that nothing has been done. My neighbours can’t pay their mortgages right now; 1 in 5 Albertans can’t pay their mortgages right now, and we’re standing here talking about $4.7 billion to corporations. What are you doing for Albertans besides heckling the opposition?

Ms Hoffman: Certainly, I share her frustration in that, yep, we have seen that 20 per cent of mortgages in Alberta have been deferred. We have seen that unemployment is at breaking levels, over 12 per cent, I believe, here in Edmonton now. At the same time, we see this government doubling down on their failed economic strategy, where, as was rightfully noted, the initial response to this massive $4.7 billion corporate giveaway was a net loss of 50,000 full-time jobs here in the province of Alberta. How does the government respond? They respond by doubling down on the failed strategy and wanting to do it faster . . .

Mr. Jeremy Nixon: Hear, hear.

Ms Hoffman: . . . when it’s clearly failed the people of this province. And the Member for Calgary-Klein continues to yell, “Hear, hear.” He’s so proud of the fact that under his watch the government has cost Albertans, including Albertans living in Calgary-Klein, 50,000 full-time jobs prepandemic and, we know, many, many more since the pandemic.

We need to be there with our kids, in the highs and the lows, to expose the lie of isolation that drives so many of our kids into self-destructive paths.
