“Wherever you are, I’m coming, I swear.”
Callie sat for a moment trying to figure out what had happened, one minute she had been driving, the next the car was skidding across the wet tarmac, and she was desperately trying to regain control but it was no use, it had been raining since 8AM that morning. Opening her eyes terrified of what she was opening them up too, her body and mind in complete shock, she had been here before, only at least this time she didn’t go through the windshield. Looking down at her leg, they were OKAY, she could move them. There was no blood except for a small around that trickled down face from where she had hit her head on the steering wheel.
Her mind went to Leanne, to her daughter, they had both already been through so much that Callie considered for a minute if she needed to tell them about this little fender bender. But when she finally got out of the car she knew she had too, there was no way she was going to be able to drive this back home. Standing outside her firebird, the car she had had since med school; the car everyone had told her she needed to replace, but she loved the damn thing it was part of her, and now the front of if had a fucking tree in it, at least she knew how she’d finally came to a stop now. Panic slowly crept in as she looked at her totalled car, this could have been so much worse. And that terrified her, after three years she was finally in a place where she had more good days than bad, and Leanne was the reason for this. She had came at a time when Callie thought she was done with love; she had had her shot and it had been wonderful. But fate as it would happen wasn’t done with her yet, and brought this beautifully damaged soul to her.
Reaching into her pocket she pulled out her cell which miraculously had survived the crash unharmed. Sliding to unlock her screen a image of Leanne & Sofia flashed up, from a day at the beach last summer, swallowing hard as the tears engulfed her, the initial shock wearing off and being replaced with raw fear. Hitting Leanne’s number she waited until she heard the familiar soothing voice on the other end, ‘hey cal – you okay? I thought you’d be home at 6.’ Tears streaming down Callie’s face she struggled to speak the reality of what she could have lost only moments before washed over her. “ Lea – I uh — I’m okay so please don’t freak out okay? But…I had an accident. I’m okay, but my car is well – can you come get me please? I’m just passed that little dinner we stopped at when we drove back from Tacoma last month. Please just come get me…” Her words muffled in sobs. 'Stay were you are okay, I’m coming – I’ll bet here soon. — cal? — I love you.’ Callie knew she needed to call the cops and probably an ambulance just to be safe, but her first thoughts had been Lea. She needed to hear her voice. “I love you too Lea”.
Callie knew looking at her car that she’d be so lucky, that someone up there had been looking for her, for Leanne and she knew that it could only be their families. Arizona, Jake, Mark, James & Amelia – they were all God’s angels now, and Callie knew that they were the reason that she was OKAY. Staring up at the night sky, the Stars sparkled over head she slipped her eyes closed an imagine of her wife and her best friend clear in her mind as she whispered “thank you.”
