The things i love most about books and movie's are the small occasionally pointless details that get added.

While they may occasionally serve a simple purpose, to relieve some stress from the situation, to display a characters nature/sense of humor, maybe it being a hidden clue to something that will happen later or to simply confuse and get a reader to laugh.

It's these tiny things, often easily forgotten, or underestimated that add some real value to the book itself. And a great "oh yeah!! This!!" Value when you re-read something.
