Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

There are many unique forms of mating in the animal kingdom- take, for example, the bronze corydoras. When a female selects a male to mate with, she will attach her mouth to his genital opening and drink his sperm. The sperm pass through her digestive system almost entirely unharmed, and end up in a special pouch formed by her pelvic fins where they can fertilize her eggs!

Quick Non- Pleco post, I had to share this Corydoras because of the condescending pleco eye roll it does so well. (I know it’s a blink, looks like an eye roll to me.)

It makes me wonder if other fish blink/roll their eyes. (Outside of plecos and corys.)

Hoplosternum littorale

...a species of armored catfish that occurs in all of South America east of the Andes and north of Buenos Aries. H. littorale typically inhabits swamps and is active at night. Its diet consists mainly of detritus and insects and micro-crustaceans. Like some other catfish H. littorale is capable of breathing both from its gills and intestines. Interestingly newly hatched larvae do not have this ability and are thought to absorb oxygen through their skin until the armored plates have developed.
