The contents and language of the gender studies class were okay, but the questions of my fellow students... Maybe it's just me, because I'm not used to people participating in class, but people did not put themselves in a good light.

i guess it's a good thing then that they are in that class and learning :)

And in turn we pay tuition to receive these outdated ideals. Makes a lot of sense, right?

to be fair, luckily in belgium, tuition is quite a paradise compared to other countries, and i mean the prof was lowkey advocating for more rights and agency, despite the crappy language, so it's not all bad, but yeah, i wish educators at least knew and acted better, because it's their responsibility. i mean i know that this prof means well, i just wish he realized that his way of talking about these issues leaves the transphobia of fellow students completely unchallenged and even encouraged :/

Today, for the first time since I started uni 4.5 years ago, I heard the word 'privilige' used in class. I almost threw my papers in the air and sang Hallelujah, but I didnt.

We talked about transgender issues in the law in our gender studies class. Someone asked a question using the word "ombouwen".

true but at least that's mostly one term, and the laws about it are actually quite exceptionally in tune with the needs of all kinds "less capable" people, handling their capability case-on-case and stuff like that, which aims to protect the most agency possible, which is recent but great progress though, still paternalizing but that's what law is and needs to be, so I can get that, and i've personally heard/read way less disrespectful language in class (which is obviously just the minimal stuff that I've read so yeah), most of the apparent disrespect is the head term that's used - which of course for the record should absolutely be changed imo

but like with transgender issues it's e v e r y t h i n g - it's not even just calling it "transsexuality" it goes all the way through and through, there's transphobic and offensive language in every aspect, because it comes from a complete lack of knowledge and understanding and respect. like the crappy language is totally on par with the crappy legal treatment.

but at least i've heard today that they're at least talking about it in the parliament, and like i said my prof was fortunately speaking out against forced sterilization, and he was absolutely - in that crappy language - kind of advocating for priotizing rights vs the juridical balance etc. etc., so I dare to hope for some progress

the transphobic and homophobic comments all around me in class though...............................

A 20/20? Woooow, I only managed that on that one multiple choice exam that allowed us to use the internet.

I honestly have no idea how I did it, because I thought this course was the hardest out of the 3 exams I had this year. Oh well :p
