My take on Taran and Callum’s first meeting.

Taran finds the Guardians attacking Nora, her brother is helpless to stop their attack. Taran and Callum have to work together to discover who it was that took Nora Thomas and bring justice. Along the way they grapple with their complicated and growing attraction. Without Nora and a difficult relationship with the rest of his family, Callum Thomas finds he could rebuild a life outside the mortal realm. And for Taran a less tedious future may be on the horizon.

like I said callum in a ponytail is awesome and I don't remember if it's canon but in my head canon he spent his 200 years in faerie learning every instrument he could get his hands on

More headcanons about Callum's battle harp:

-It was a wedding gift commissioned by Taran

-It is made of the purest silver (melted down from the antlers of the Wildwood deer, which is thought to be how silver first came into the world)

-It was enchanted by a fellow harpist in the court

-This is how the enchantment works: Callum sits somewhere far away from the battle, but from a vantage point that lets him watch. He plays the kind of music that makes you want to cry no matter the context. The enchantment magnifies the music's inherent sadness and projects it wherever Callum turns his gaze. It is so beautiful and so devastating that the enemy soldiers fall where they stand and burst into tears of abject lamentation, fatally exposing them to their opponents.

-The harpist who enchanted the harp warned Taran that Callum would have to be careful not to paralyze the soldiers on his own side. "Every enchantment has its shadow," the harpist said smoothly. Taran paid him and waved him away.

-BUT. Taran was unaware this particular harpist held a grudge against Callum. Faeries have a ridiculous habit of being jealous of mortals, especially when those mortals dare to count themselves among the fae in any matter deserving of honor or fame.

-Nearly twenty years went by before Callum had reason to take the harp into battle for the first time. It was an overwhelming success—some even said the harp is what turned the tide so the king (Wendell's father) could triumph. But the harpist had not told Taran the true shadow that lay beneath the enchantment. Since Callum was the one playing the harp, the protection against passive enchantments* that Taran had laid on him did not apply. Callum himself was caught up in the music as any mortal would be. He could not stop playing, nor could he hear any commands to stop over the music. He could only be stopped with force, which was difficult because if he looked at this person of course the enchantment would hit them. By the time he was finally torn away, the strings were covered in blood.

-Callum asked Taran the next day if the enchantment could be altered to protect him. Taran said it could not; he had already tortured the dishonest harpist to death during the night. (This involved forcing the man to play his own harp until he died of blood loss. You've never heard of harp strings being sharpened? You have now.)

-Taran wanted to destroy the harp, but Callum pointed out that it may have saved the king's life, as well as both of theirs. So the harp goes into battle still, but only at the uttermost need like defending the castle itself.

*Passive enchantments are things like faerie wine, the confusion mortals get just by stumbling into a faerie realm, and enchanted objects like the harp, i.e. enchantments not being directly cast by a faerie in that moment.
