I finally found this year’s Calvatia gigantea. More like it found me, on account of it’s literally ginormous. Also, dryad’s saddle is making its autumnal comeback.

Found this puff ball near Salt Lake City, Utah. Looks delicious, but smells gross. Not sure of the species

Almost definitely a Calvatia puffball species! My guess is Calvatia booniana, a common edible in the western US, especially in the Rocky Mountains.

I’m thrown slightly by that central area that is possibly the beginning of the development of a sterile basal stem - which would rule out C. booniana, and would suggest C. cyathiformis  or C. craniiformis instead, which appears in the western US, but less frequently than in the east. 

All of these are edible, however, and their smell is generally described as non-distinctive.
