Old Friends

Maelie couldn’t remember the last time she had felt this nervous. Well, actually, that wasn’t entirely true. She had been plenty nervous many other times, many of which were recent, but this was slightly different. When she had explained everything to Jack, at least it had been within the confined space of her home. And that was Jack, Cam was entirely different. Sure, they spoke perfectly pleasantly at the wedding, but was this to be the same? She knew she had to prepare answers in advance, be able to explain her life the last few years just in case he asked.

Her answers wouldn’t be completely truthful, but he wouldn’t want to know the truth anyway.

As he didn’t know Paris very well yet, Maelie had chosen the restaurant. It was a good place for conversation - not too formal, and a bit of live music to cover up any questions they may not want others overhearing. Just in case. When the blonde arrived, she took a deep breath, pausing at the door a moment. She’d arrived several minutes early, just to be sure that she wouldn’t be late, but now she had trouble bringing herself to open the door.

Cam was as much an older brother to her as her real siblings, and he’d probably known her even better. It felt childish, but she could feel the fear of disappointment ringing in her chest. What if he disapproved of the life she was living? It was wildly different from the life she was bred for. She would have had several children by now, if things were different. A large home, a husband, a staff... instead, she had a flower shop, a small flat, and a cat. She was respected in her field, but her field was not what she was meant to be doing, if her upbringing was any indication.

Finally, after taking a deep breath, the blonde lifted her chin, and raised her hand to open the door to the establishment. Music flooded her ears from the pianist in the corner. Mozart, she was certain of it - nothing too distracting, anyway. Once arriving at her table, she sat down, trying her best to not appear nervous. The menu in front of her, and the door, were fighting for her eyes’ attention, as she waited for her lunch companion to arrive, terrible conversation scenarios spinning around in her mind.
