@trl i have questions
B A B E S
hnly x she loves control theory
so since expectations came out yesterday (buy it, stream it, listen to it, stan it, live it, eat it, drink it, breathe it, suPPORT IT) i’ve heard it at least 20 times and i began to notice some parallels between my favorite song on the album, he’ll never love you (hnly) and my favorite song from camila cabello’s album, she loves control.
we all know that hayley and camila met on trl, thus causing their separate (and sometimes combined) fandoms to go head-over-ass crazy and dub them haymila.
i’m a tiny bit biased, to be fair. i ship them hardcore, but that’s what caused me to create this theory.
so after all the rumors about them came out (hah), camila is suddenly spotted with matthew hussey, which in a chain reaction made everyone realize that they were “dating”. (i use the quotes because i still haven’t decided if they’re pr or not.)
she loves control is an incredible song and that’s why i like it so much. if any of you have read my short review of expectations, which i typed out AS i listened to the album, you’ll know that i immediately thought that hnly sounded like she loves control, which may be another reason why hnly is my favorite song on expectations. they both have a bouncy, latinx pop sort of feel, which isn’t strange for camila because she likes to write that kind of tex-mex music. however, it is a little out of character for hayley, who mostly makes dark pop and hip-hop-esque songs.
this led me to believe, based on this style diversion that doesn’t happen anywhere else on the album (if there were more songs like it on expectations, i would chalk it up to coincidence) and the lyrics of the song, that it is a message for camila. hear me out here, we’re just getting started.
(remember, this is my theory. if it did happen, cool! i’m right, but if it didn’t, us fans shouldn’t flame or shame the parties involved, because that’s not cool. this is all purely speculation.)
the story in hnly is hayley telling a girl who is either stuck in the closet or carrying some bad internalized homophobia that the guy she’s with will never care for her as much as hayley herself will.
my theory is that there may have been a little spark between the two at trl, and hayley felt it and tried to make a move on camila. camila rejected her, explaining that she liked boys. because of all the shipping, either management or her own unacceptance (??) of herself prompted her to start going out with matthew. i think hayley may have gotten mad because she knew she was repressing herself and wrote hnly as a message to her, using a style closer to camila’s to show her that it was for her.
again, this is all speculation. comment your thoughts down below, i would love to hear them. happy 20gayteen! 🌈
