single-use camera hack

Last summer, I got myself one of those single-use kodak cameras while I was in London (and at quite a deal since I caught the owners of the shop selling cameras with expired film!). I’ve had a lomography fisheye camera since I was a child, but I wanted a proper analog one. However, proper analog cameras are seen as some kind of luxury good. So I decided to make myself one.

I am a simple creature, I like colourful stuff, and I like playing with multiple exposures, so as soon as I used up the pre-loaded film, I got to work. A good simplifying trick that these single-use cameras use is that the film starts unwinded and gets wound back onto the spool as you take pictures. That way, if you fuck up your camera along the way, the pictures you’ve already taken are still safe. I added some sewing string to the hatch that closes the lens blind so that I can have manual exposure (that’s the red string), and some thicker string to the winding stopper so that I can do multiple exposures on a single frame. (If you attempt to do this yourself, be mindful of the flash capacitor and make sure it is empty so you don’t hurt yourself, it packs quite a punch.)

Anyway, I finally punched out the whole film and got it developed. Most of the pictures were wasted because: a) I am a shit photographer and am mostly winging the exposure time b) I “accidentally” exposed the film to light because it fell off the teeth (in the camera’s defence, I was carrying it in my jacket pocket), and so I thought that the film was completed (I forgot to set up the shot counter so I was also winging that xq) roughly half-way through.

Tbh, I rly like the burnt-film effect.  I’m mostly bummed that I fucked up the long-exposures of the night sky :/ .

All in all, it worked at the level I expected it too (not that I set the bar too high lmao). I think I’ll try adding some kind of zooming capabilities in the future, or just straight up 3d print myself one since the plastic these things are made of is pretty cheap.
