Part 2: Review the Review - Cameralabs

Perhaps I should not single out just Cameralabs here, because other sites are just as guilty, so it feels like I am picking on them, while they are one of the most respected voices out there. 

The problem starts with a numbering system that gives marks based on build, specification, image quality, etc etc.  Under normal circumstances this works fine, as higher quality cameras have better build, better image quality etc and are better all round performers than lower quality cameras.  The problem arises with a camera like the Panasonic FZ100.  Panasonic wanted to build on the success of the FZ18, FZ28, and FZ35/38 models by increasing the mega-pixels and zoom.  The build and handling on the FZ100 may be still be superb, but this camera does a complete and utter belly flop when it comes to image quality. 

According to Cameralabs the camera still scores high enough for the "recommended" label, though for image quality the reviewer very generously to gave it a 13/20 (65%).  

If the camera fails on image quality, it does not matter how great the rest of the camera performs or handles.  No matter how we slice it, if image quality is poor, then the camera is poor (and so is its owner).

When the reviewers finish their review they need to take a step back and think about whether the review actually makes sense.  It does not make sense to recommend a camera that takes poor quality images.  Of course everyone was surprised to learn that Panasonic, after making so many sensibly well performing cameras, came out with the horrible dud like the FZ100.
