A deciduous dream Fall’s explosion of colours A feast for your eyes Nature’s autumnal show is an incredible feast of colour. A mind-blowing kaleidoscope of all the shades of yellow, red and orange. The tundra (if you ever been there in August) is ignited by the fiery show, and the south’s deciduous woods and forests become a glowing tapestry. Our tree-lined streets and garden shrubs radiate a fire-hearth warmth before the onset of winter that we know will follow. As the season comes to a close, those vivd colours fade to feuille-morte’s yellows and browns and those trees that provided summer shade stand as dark dormant sentinels waiting for the warmth and lengthening days of spring. As a geologist, I can’t help but find fall’s colours reminding me of limonite, copper, wulfenite, and of course gold. We are lucky to witness this annual event and hopefully realize that trees enrich our lives, and the towns and cities we live in. In Ontario and elsewhere in North America, our urban forests are threatened by invasive species (e.g., Gypsy Moth, Emerald Ash Borer and Asian Longhorn Beetle), agriculture and continued urban sprawl.
