Haunting Halloween . . . . . Beyond the image is my poem for this Halloween. Read it, if you dare💀 💀🧟‍♂️🧛‍♂️ Parallax 💀 Tread carefully my child, lest you stumble slip or fall. The rains have been heavy and the dark your name will call. 💀 That puddle on the path is not what it appears, beneath its mirrored surface are the sum of all your fears. 💀 Think twice before your foot sets down and ripples spread away, for it might be your last step on this autumnal day. 💀 The reflection of our peaceful world hides something in that place. Evil that will take your soul yet rarely show it's face. 💀 The dark secret that lies beneath has come to life once more. What lives within that nether world will consume you to your core. 💀 It lurks within the shadows some say it is our curse, and the fractured rippled surface conceals a parallel universe. 💀 It will tear your spirit from you in the silent reflected skies, no one will hear your final screams as the puddle shrinks and dries. 💀 It will take your dreams that gleam so bright, the keys to your desires, and cast your emptied body upon its eternal pyres 💀 So step around the water mindful of what you've been told. Windshift Unnaturally forced by technique Leaves move, seemingly in unison Beautiful abstract patterns emerge Be still and wait for the shifting wind How happily they dance Frenetic free spirits 🍁🎨 I was drawn to ICM images and was impressed by how photographer‘s create beauty from, in many cases, everyday items or scenes. Their subtle softened hues, sense of motion and sometimes extraordinary blends of intense colour are amazing. I am still learning and exploring the possibilities. 🍁🎨 I find my intentional movement has its limits. I can move the camera in only so many ways and I found the patterns were similar and, I’ll be honest, some of my images are repetitive. The subject matter could differ, but the results were anthropogenically constrained. Like an artist’s brushstroke across a canvas, I was controlling the outcome. 🍁🎨 Placing my camera aside, I watched the trees and watched each branch and leaf moving individually or together, but differently. Swaying, fluttering and going still, The variability in direction and intensity of each breeze or gust, and the angle, shape and orientation of each leaf and branch, meant that their movement was random and wonderful to behold. 🍁🎨 I am sure there’s a mathematical formula showing how even this is controlled, but to me it is nature’s beautifully choreographed chaos. Maple Trees . . . . . Leaves dance in the wind, to echoes of autumns past Colours fade with time [] In my previous post I mentioned that those of us living in North America are blessed to witness Mother Natures annual fiery tapestry. The stars of the show are the Maples dressed in there finest Autumnal hues. [] It got me thinking, how long have Maple trees been around. It turns out just over 60 million years! [] Then I wondered what those ancient maple-filled forests must have looked like. Were the Paleogene fall colours as vibrant as today’s or more-so? [] I found the posted link (see my comment) and I have to say it’s a long read for someone who isn’t a dendrologist. However, it’s still worth it, as it provides us with some important thoughts on whether maples, that have survived millions of years of adverse climate change will adapt, survive and still be around for our kids, our grandchildren and beyond. A deciduous dream Fall’s explosion of colours A feast for your eyes Nature’s autumnal show is an incredible feast of colour. A mind-blowing kaleidoscope of all the shades of yellow, red and orange. The tundra (if you ever been there in August) is ignited by the fiery show, and the south’s deciduous woods and forests become a glowing tapestry. Our tree-lined streets and garden shrubs radiate a fire-hearth warmth before the onset of winter that we know will follow. As the season comes to a close, those vivd colours fade to feuille-morte’s yellows and browns and those trees that provided summer shade stand as dark dormant sentinels waiting for the warmth and lengthening days of spring. As a geologist, I can’t help but find fall’s colours reminding me of limonite, copper, wulfenite, and of course gold. We are lucky to witness this annual event and hopefully realize that trees enrich our lives, and the towns and cities we live in. In Ontario and elsewhere in North America, our urban forests are threatened by invasive species (e.g., Gypsy Moth, Emerald Ash Borer and Asian Longhorn Beetle), agriculture and continued urban sprawl. Gold over Blue [] The sun at days end touches the rising mountain A vibrant blue gem [] . . . . . While it’s not a sapphire, this gem is a multifaceted natural treasure. [] Rising from the southern shore of Georgian Bay, Blue Mountain is part of the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO 1990). [] With its economy reliant on tourism, most of its visitors are attracted by the all-season outdoor activities the region provides. [] However, its beauty lies in its forest-covered slopes and valleys, its streams, ponds and marshes, and the fields and orchards interwoven with them. AFFINITIES [] In the dark expanse of space phantasmal objects swirl. [] Light from distant orbs. travels for eons to reach us. [] New worlds form where none existed. [] Within your brain, a universe of interconnected cells has cosmic affinities. [] Their galactic signals define our being and guide us to reach out and touch the stars . . . . . [] I started working on this poem soon after the Webb Telelescope’s images were released. [] I’ve studied rocks that are almost 2.7 billion years old, but still find the vastness of space and time overwhelming. [] While galaxies and stars in the cosmos can be billions of light years away and much older than the Earth, there are many that don’t require a telescope. All you need is an inquisitive eye, a sense of wonder, your imagination, and fearlessness in the face of abstract phenomena. [] The beauty of melding photography with an unconstrained imagination is that it allows us to unlock new realms of creative expression. Ghosts of Spring [] Ethereal fragments of seasons past [] We wish their colours would always last. [] Through time’s facets they brightly glow, [] dancing for us, to and fro. [] Their life-giving spirit [] we allowed to die. [] But our guilt will [] remain in [] our mind’s [] eye . . . . . Flowering plants are not only beautiful, but they are a critical part of our global food chain, and they are threatened by much more than climate change. [] Many believe we are at a tipping point. Insect species are declining globally, and many are endangered. So why are we losing something so essential to ecological survival? [] Urbanization and related pollution have impacted biodiversity for decades, but the global impact of industrial agriculture and aquaculture is wreaking havoc on the biosphere, including pollinators, and it is threatening food security. Is seeing believing? . . . . . Behind the curtain What’s real and what is not? Sheer Credulity [] I’ve always been fascinated by how the orientation of an image, or the subject within it, influences our perception and interpretation of what we think we see. [] Viewed horizontally we might be witnessing the chemical reaction between two fluids in a chute. Maybe it’s the transition of darkness over light or vice versa, or motion-enhanced light and shadow on the surface of a stream. [] Vertically oriented, the blue could be paint flowing over still-wet yellow. Or is it someone’s fingers reaching into a large jar of golden honey? [] In the original photograph’s orientation, sunlight floods the upper half while the lower is darkened by shadows from trees. Are those really shadows of trees? They look like people. Maybe they are. [] External and personal influences, including how the image makes us feel, also play a part in shaping our interpretation. [] A picture can be interpreted in many ways, especially when our imagination is not boxed in by external bias. Bias can be polarized and bent to suit a narrative. Once read, my interpretations will likely influence your interpretations. [] We all know that today’s world is filled with information and disinformation. The lines between light and shadow, reality and fiction, and truth and lies are often blurred beyond comprehension. Conflict . . . . . Which way will it go? The struggle to restore light. Life beyond the noise. [🇺🇦] For the past three months I have posted my images, poems, and thoughts on instagram. Meanwhile conflict has been raging in Ukraine. [🇺🇦] I can’t be alone in thinking how surreal today’s world is. Vivid scenes of the war are broadcast through various media and interspersed with ads “from our sponsors”. With a press of a button we change the channel to something resonating with our comfortable lives. [🇺🇦] While refugees scramble to escape the horror of what their once peaceful lives have become, many around the world go about their daily lives and plan family vacations. [🇺🇦] This isn’t a new phenomena, but maybe I recognize the disconnect and noise more than before. What we are witnessing is reality, not a video game. A Wish Before Midnight . . . . . Across an amethystine night sky, the fleeting arcs of shooting stars form incandescent traces. Their distorted echoes mirrored by our thoughts, influence our desire to make a wish. [] The Doomsday Clock was originally intended to show how close we are to nuclear catastrophe. Nowadays it is also used to show how close we are to a climate catastrophe. It is currently set at one hundred seconds before midnight. Many believe we’ve already past that point. [] Biodiversity is essential for the processes that support all life on Earth. However, in a list of threats to biodiversity, climate change ranks fifth. The change in our use of land and the oceans is ranked number one. It is followed by species overexploitation, the global spread of invasive species and disease, and pollution. These threats are a consequence of how we treat the world. Their impact can be reduced by changing how we consume resources, produce food, by genuinly restricting urban sprawl, and improving how we interact with Nature [] Each and every one of us can make a difference by confronting complacency, acting locally, and going beyond good intentions and wishes. Serpentine . . . . . Rippling waves follow time’s complex path. Changing those that had come before. Folding and interfering An Intricate pattern of stratIfied tales seem to emerge, in a blink of an eye This time my poem is a nonet with a somewhat geological theme combined with a pseudo-geological image created from an ICM image. [📷] Time travels forward, but when we look back, we often find its waves interfere and coalesce, creating a convoluted maze of clues. A jumble of thoughts that might be tied to one another, or maybe not. Determining the true connectivity is even more difficult to do when history is being altered, rewritten and embellished for personal gain and inciting action against others. [📷] Life is never simple, it’s often a serpentine mess. However, we have the tools and ability to unravel its mysteries, learn from our mistakes and, hopefully, understand, appreciate and celebrate what defines us. Ephemeral Flames . . . . . Brief the flame remains Bright and beautifully bold The garden‘s abuzz. [🌷 ☀️] Spring has truly arrived in Ontario. Gardens are coming into colour and with the warmth and flowers come a multitude of insects and birds. It’s not just in the garden, but also in the woods nearby where Trout Lillies and Trilliums now bloom. Wetland A treed palisade Protecting yet protected Its waters shine bright . . . . . [🌎🌍🌏] This photo was taken as the golden glow of the early evening sun lit up the ten-acre Lighthouse Point Conservation area on Georgian Bay. The shrubs and trees growing along the edge act as a partial protective barrier but invasive species like Phragmites are a reminder of how we impact wetland ecosystems. However, continued development, in this case along Georgian Bay‘s south shore, is a greater threat. [🌎🌍🌏] Less than 17% of the Earth’s surface falls within areas of protected and conserved land and inland water ecosystems. [🌎🌍🌏] In Ontario, urban sprawl, new highways, and the building of recreational homes and complexes threatens protected lands and waters. This unsustainable process threatens the 450-acre Silver Creek Wetland, west of Lighthouse Point. Home to diverse fauna and flora, it is considered the last intact coastal wetland in the region. A petition has been set up to save the Silver Creek Wetland. [🌎🌍🌏] We can’t just hope our wetland waters shine bright for years to come, we have to become active in their preservation wherever we live. Ghosts in the Machine Cars and life speed by In our electrified world. Ghosts in the machine . . . . . [🚘] This photo was taken with my iPhone. A foggy night diffusing the glow from street lighting. No cars were driving by, but my movement created the shapes that look like cars going by. [🚘] China, the US, Japan and India sold almost 44 million cars last year. In case you didn’t know it, humans love cars. “I drive, therefore I am”. You would have to be living under a rock to not know that EVs are touted as the panacea for the world’s climate ills. Although they produce less pollution when driven their production is not as environmentally and socially benign. The mining and processing of Rare Earth Elements that EVs require have created environmental disaster areas such as The Bayan Obo Mine in China. Much of the world’s cobalt, used in making vehicle cathodes, is mined in the DRC and is associated with child labour, corruption and toxic pollution. Although, Deep Sea Mining of polymetallic nodules is promoted as a way to reduce pollution it will impact deep sea biodiversity. The promoters are banking on “out of sight out of mind”. There’s also the the ubiquitous use of toxic PFAS chemicals in automobile manufacturing and recycling; another ticking time bomb for our health. On top of this we need energy to recharge EV batteries. Of course there are not enough renewable energy sources So, yes we will still need fossil fuels. La Terra . . . . . We adore her but lie to her face She gives us life and so much more Jewels that she freely gives We despoil without requite Unsustainable? Without a doubt Can we change? Maybe? Hope [🌎] Many of Barcelona’s visitors consider Laz Ramblas as a defining part of the city. I believe Passeig de Gràcia’s tiled sidewalks are equally defining. The tile’s pattern, designed by Antoni Gaudí, immediately caught my eye. In one area I found a plastic jewel; out of place against the beauty of the tile’s leaf-like pattern but adding intriguing interpretative possibilities. A few days later, I visited Montjuïc Park. At the top of the grand staircase I captured the sun silhouetting a female statue. Back at the hotel I merged the two images, and then forgot about it. [🌎] Recently, #patriziaspeaks posted an image from Montjuïc. It jogged my memory and I decided to find out more. I contacted Xavier Martin Masip (Sants-Montjuïc Council) and he kindly Informed me that the statue was created by Frederic Marès and is called “La Terra” (The Earth). [🌎] The nonet poem I wrote allowed me to build a story about La Terra. A beautiful woman adored but used by all. Regardless of how many say they love her; they abuse her kindness by continually taking more of her jewels. Sadly, she knows their thirst for more is insatiable.
