23. Gale taught his daughter everything he knew about hunting, plants and animals. The little girl loved birds and she used to sing while they were checking out their snares. Her smile was so beautiful that he could stare at her for hours. Her sweet voice was the only thing that could calm him. Gale loved waking up in the middle of the night and see her standing in front of him, afraid of her nightmares, and hold her against him until she was able to fall asleep again: he loved protecting her every way he could. What a pity everything was just a dream, and the little Primrose was never born.
22. “I’m sorry for your loss,” Greasy Sae said, a couple of months after the war ended, when he was already living in District 2. “Losing a friend is the worst thing that can happen to a human being…” “I lost her more than a year ago, Sae. I just… I never realized that until now,” Gale replied, still not keeping his eyes way from the screen: where Katniss and Peeta were holding hands while talking to the survivors of the rebellion. He looked at Greasy Sae, finally, “I never did.”
21. Hazelle told Gale the ‘good news’ about Katniss’ wedding, and they even gave her another invitation for him. Gale read it in front of his mother. “… the three of us will be waiting for you,” he ended the letter. “Three of us?” “She… Gale, she… They want you to…” “I don’t really want to ruin their celebration,” he started walking away, but stopped and turned around. “Tell them I wish them the best,” he smiled sideways. Then he locked himself into his room.
20. Gale took his only daughter’s hand before saying his last words, “I regret most of the things I’ve done during my whole life, but there’s one I know I don’t and never will: having you… Prim” Then he closed his eyes and wished the real Prim had died like him: looking like an old woman, near the ones she loved… peacefully.
19. Many children were curious about Gale in District 2. They didn’t understand why he hated them so much, so they used to stalk him and follow him everywhere. Once, he caught one of them trying to steal a turkey he hunted in a neighbour district. “Stealing is punishable by death,” he said to the little girl. “Why do you hunt? You’ve got enough food to feed many families.” She was twelve, more or less, or at least that’s what he thought. “It reminds me all times. Now go with your mum and tell your friends to stop following me everywhere, please.” “Only if you teach me how to hunt.”
18. An old man pointed at the big screen in the Hob as he asked “I bet they are going to win, huh?” “I guess…” Gale replied, trying to focus more on selling his meat than watching his best friend kissing the baker.
