Lament
Daily Writing Challenge – November 2025 – Day 2 – November 10th – Lucky/Heartache
Camliri knocked on the door to her eldest daughter’s bedroom. Raena didn’t answer right away, but Cam could her the young woman sobbing inside, faint music coming from the Gnomish radio in her room.
“Rae? Can I come in, darling?” There was a rustling behind the door, the music turned down, and the soft padding of feet coming towards the door before it cracked open. And when it did, Cam’s heart cracked. Her baby girl stood there, her face tear-streaked and red, eyes puffy and wet.
“Momma…” the girl said and opened the door wide for her mother. Cam embraced her, pulling the younger elf against her, letting her rest her head on her shoulder, wrapping her baby in a hug as the golden-haired girl sobbed.
She was an adult now, her eldest child, but there are times when a girl still needs her mom, and when Raena had learned of her boyfriend’s lies and infidelity, she had sent her mom a message, asking if she could come home to the estate in Shattrath for a few days, not revealing why in the message.
“Of course, darling,” Cam had replied immediately, making sure to have Rae’s room cleaned, her bathroom stocked with her favorite things, and her favorite foods bought for the kitchen and pantry. The Arcanist didn’t know what was wrong, but she knew something was, so she made sure Raena’s homecoming would be as gentle as possible.
When the young Paladin had arrived, bags in hand, her face pale under her golden freckles, her eyes sad, Camliri knew something awful had happened. At first, she thought maybe it was something with her training, but Rae just shook her head ‘no’. She said that she just needed to get cleaned up, and headed for her room where Cam heard the water running in her bathtub. She went back downstairs to her study, and waited until she heard Raena go back to her bedroom, and then went up to talk to her.
“What happened, my sweet?” she whispered to her daughter. Rae huffed out a sob, her shoulders shaking.
“He lied, momma. He lied. He told me he loved me, that he wanted to court me, marry me, have a family with me… But I came home from training early one day, and found him… found him in bed… in bed with another woman.” She broke on that last word, pressing her face tighter against her mom’s shoulder, the weeping as quietly as she could. Heat rose in Cam’s chest, up her neck and into her face, that fire magic leaping to the surface with her anger, the urge to find this man and burn down everything he loved nearly overwhelming. He’d hurt her child, and she wanted him to hurt. Of course, she’d do no such thing, and would instead be there for her daughter.
“I’m so sorry, my heart,” she whispered against Raena’s sunny hair, stroking it gently.
“I know there’s nothing I can really do to take this heartache away, to ease your suffering in this moment, but I am here for you, always. You can stay as long as you need, this is your home, we want you here, and you need to be here right now.” She held Raena tightly, unconsciously rocking back and forth as she smoothed her hand over the girl’s hair.
“How did I get so lucky to have you as my mother?” Raena whispered against her mother’s now damp shirt, sniffling quietly. Cam laughed softly.
“The world works in mysterious ways, dear heart,” the Arcanist said, that heat subsiding as she held on to her first baby.
“Why don’t we go get some ice cream?” Cam suggested, and Raena nodded slightly. Slinging her arm around Rae’s shoulders, they headed down to the kitchen, where Maelin joined them in an evening of ice cream, tears, and some shit talking about what an asshole this boy is.
