Like many cities in America, Austin in inundated with events, festivals, parades, etc. nearly every weekend. Because Austin is such a fit and outdoorsy community, which is significantly helped by the pleasant weather for about 8 months of the year, fun runs, marathons, and races are happening almost constantly. Fun runs are a great way to get out, get moving, donate to a needy cause, and simply enjoy Austin. They are a part of the Austin atmosphere and lifestyle, and their sometimes weird themes or goals are what make this city great. So get out there and have some fun with these 11 races taking place over the course of the next couple of months:
Sunday, April 7th 8:00AM-11:30AM
Congress Avenue & Barton Springs Road
This year will mark its 36th year for the Statesman Capitol 10K. This race is the largest 10K in Texas and 5th largest in the country, with an estimated 25,000 participants. This year the race will benefit the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas. HEB, the race’s sponsor, will be holding a costume contest as well.Registration is now open!
Sunday, April 14th 8:00AM to 9:00PM
The Longhorn Run encircles the forty acres of the University of Texas, looping around from the fountain on 21st. The 10K has prizes for both students and non-students, and you can also register as a team. Race registration ends on Friday, April 13th, so register now!
Saturday and Sunday, April 20th-21st 12:00PM to 7:00AM
The Run to the Sun is an overnight trek from Enchanted Rock to Laguna Gloria. The course is 90 miles long, starting mid-day at the Enchanted Rock State Park and finishes at Laguna Gloria at sunrise. The race is a relay, with 25-40 participating teams consisting of 6-10 members. The relay consists of 16 sections, each between 4-7 miles long. The event raises funds to benefit to the Beyond Batton Disease Foundation and hopes to raise over $200,000 this year.
Sunday, April 21st 8:00AM to 10:00PM
The American Heroes Run benefits military, veterans, and military families in the Central Texas area. Proceeds from the race go to Hope for Heroes, the Texas Military Forces Museum, and the Honor Flight Museum. The race is a part of the American Heroes Weekend at Camp Mabry, which features weapons displays, rides in miliatry vehicles, war renactments, and the Heroes Air Show. An ID is required to enter, so register now!
Saturday, April 27th 8:00AM to 6:00PM
Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Texas Round-Up features a partner 5K, an individual 5K, and a family mile. The race completes a loop that starts and ends right in front of the museum. The goal of the Round-Up is to inspire Texans and Austinites alike to get healthy and build a healthy lifestyle. Don’t miss the finish line party!
Saturday, April 27th 9:00AM to 1:00PM
Travis County Expo Center
The Retro Run is a 5K where running retro is the way to go. Participants receive a Retro Run t-shirt and sunglasses. There is no age limit and the race is not timed, so dig out your retro work out wear and get running.
Sunday, April 28th 7:00AM to 12:00PM
This year will be the 31st Bun Run, benefiting Austin Sunshine Camps, which have provided leadership opportunities and camping experiences for underserved young people for over 80 years in the Austin area. The Bun Run features both a 5K and 10K race, and there is also a 1K race for the kids!
Friday, May 3, 7:00PM to 8:30 PM
The Undie Run benefits Cancer for College as students compete on campuses across the nation to fundraise as much as possible for the organization to provide scholarships for those battling cancer and college simultaneously. Entrance requires a $25 donation and enters you into a drawing to be an extra in Anchorman 2. The Undie Run is quite an experience and one you certainly do not want to miss.
Chuy’s 30th Annual Hot to Trot
Saturday, May 4th 7:45AM to 10:30AM
2013 marks the 30th year for the Chuy’s Hot to Trot 5K. The course runs throughout South Austin, starting at the Chuy’s Arbor Trails location. The race benefits Special Olympics Texas, which works to prodive training and competition to Special Olympic Atheletes year-round. Elvis will of course make an apperance, so register now!
Saturday, May 4th 8:00AM to 1:00PM
Travis County Expo Center
The Color Run takes place downtown and benefits the ColorCancer non-profit organization. The 5K race requires that you wear a white t-shirt at the start to get the most out of the crazy color fun. You can run individually or in teams of 4, but register soon!
Autism Speaks 8k Run and 1k Fun Run
Presented by The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, the 8K race on the grounds of Camp Mabry benefits Autism Speaks to raise funds for Autism research, prevention, treatment, and hopefully a cure. Register before May 12th, so don’t wait!
