Confronting Ghosts of 2000 in South Carolina

The state is a painful symbol of the brutality of politics for John McCain, the place that derailed his 2000 bid.

It was a reference to Bridget, who was adopted as a baby from an orphanage in Bangladesh and is darker skinned than the rest of the McCain family. Richard Hand, a professor at Bob Jones University, sent an e-mail message to “fellow South Carolinians” telling recipients that Mr. McCain had “chosen to sire children without marriage.”

I have found that this kind of correction of BJU's hate has popped up consistently for a century. It's always a relief:

There are countless Catholics as well as Protestants who have accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.

Recent criticism of Bob Jones University has led Bob Jones III, numerous writers of letters to the editor and others to claim that religious freedom is being threatened.

In this instance, "religious freedom" is being used as a smokescreen to silence legitimate criticism.

The religious freedom defense is made and echoed in spite of the fact that Bob Jones Ill and his predecessors have condemned other religious groups, including Christian groups, and have aggressively engaged in conservative partisanship in national political campaigns.

The truth is that religious freedom is alive and well in this great country. However, this country will not and should not fail to respond vigorously to religious groups that, based on their particular biblical interpretation, demonize other religions. Nor, of course, are partisan conservative political activities by BJU protected from a vigorous response by the opposite political party.

The greatest threat to religious freedom is not from the federal government or from the U. S. Senate as many have suggested. The real threat is from Bob Jones III and other people who, given the chance to impose their particular religion officially or unofficially on other religious groups, would do so with no hesitation or reservation - indifferent to or possibly unaware of the painful lessons of history.

They would claim to be motivated by Christian love and a desire to "save" members of other religious groups. These people comprise a sizable fraction of our population but fortunately are fragmented among differing religious groups.

Your friends at Bob Jones University appreciate that many of you have agonized with us throughout the last weeks of unjustified harassment directed at this institution by the national media.

The community has rallied in friendship and understanding. The Greenville News has spoken courageously to the broader, more important issue of abridgement of religious freedom represented by the attacks on BJU.

Local Christians have prayed; calls and letters to the University have shown perception and support. You know the University close up through its students and graduates. You knew the media portrayal was false.

We are proud to be part of the thoughtful and conservative Upstate.

How good it would be if the national media, who contrived this issue, would zero in on the high caliber of students, their dress and demeanor and other good qualities, rather than exposing the negatives in such a biased way.

This comes from the same university whose president, Bob Jones III said only a few months ago, "I hate Elton Jones and everything he stands for. A statement needless to say, laced with hate and bigotry. Among other things, Elton John stands for music, love, understanding, tolerance, family, friendship and faith. Does Bob Jones III actually hate love, faith, family and understanding?

These so-called messengers of God's word are nothing more than hypocrites.
