Sunset from the Palouse
Laundry Daze
If you moved away from home, you'd know the real struggle with laundry. Not necessarily that you don't know how to do it, more so it's actually doing it. For me, I can go up to 3 weeks without doing my laundry before I start running out of socks. As a girl, I have a shit ton, and I mean a shit ton of underwear (thank you Victoria's Secret and American Eagle), so I never worry about running out of those. But as a broke college student, I reuse each bit of clothing until I deem them unusable, EXCEPT PANTIES. Lemme tell you, I only wear mines once and then it's done. I know girls that use one multiple times because they're running out *throws up*.
So my college laundry tip to you: find an apartment complex, or even a house, that has a washer AND dryer in the unit. I swear, the on-site laundry facility here (Campus Commons North) is under 2 minutes walking distance, and yet I do laundry about once a month. Why? Because a I'm a broke college student that's why! I don't have the quarters in the world to give pay for laundry. Here, as of the 2013-2014 school year, laundry takes $1.25 to wash, and $0.25 for 10 minutes of drying time. Let's do some math:
On average, I do 2 loads, but since I had towels and sweaters to wash, I had to do 3 today. So today I paid a total of $3.75 just to wash my clothes (which btw, the washers here suck. They're small and don't even really wash the clothes!) To dry, I did 2 loads for 40 minutes, and 1 load for 50 minutes. To dry, I paid $3.25. Today's laundry grand total is... *drum roll* $7.00! 7 bucks for laundry today, nuts! You know what I could by with 7 bucks? FOOD. I am a (again) broke college student, and I would rather use smelly clothes than starve. I definitely have my priorities straight.
And I haven't washed my bed sheets in a hot minute because that'd take a load itself, and I ain't go no money fo' dat! I am living off financial aid refunds and the money my mom and dad generously give me because they don't want me to starve and die while I live in Washington. But that comes to my next laundry tip: use your clothes wisely! I bum it to school all day, err'day. I look like a bum because I want to and because it helps me become unapproachable by people. I just give this smug look on my face, and all of a sudden, people don't sit next to me in lectures, yes! You don't need to dress up in 30-40 degree whether. I slip on two pairs of bottoms (long john's and sweats), an undershirt, a sweater, and my snow jacket. I look the same everyday, and that's because I don't want to waste clothes. If it ain't some formal outing or something, you can expect me to look like the way I described everyday. But hey, it saves me from doing laundry so often.
So yeah, having a W/D in the unit will eliminate extra costs. I mean naturally those places that do have them in the unit, are generally a little pricer, but that's why you have roommates and a lot of them. Find friends, heck, even find a friend that lives with their significant other, because that way you can split costs more ways than just the two of you. Also, with a bigger household, there's less chores to do for a single person. semi-clean house is a must before you start to hate your roomies. It'd suck to hate and live with roomies, but I guess that's something else to talk about in another blog.
SUMMARY OF LAUNDRY TIPS:
Find an apartment complex or house that has a W/D in the unit
Use clothes wisely
Find friends, even those that have significant others, to live with so there are more ways to split costs
Deven: The Commons Building
I was walking back from class today and I saw that the construction on the Campus Commons building is looking great! I am so excited for this building to finally be completed because it is where I will be working for Student Activities, club meetings, and so much more! I think the best part is the commons building is right next to my building! It is going to be beautiful and I can't wait to see what it looks like finished!
Xoxo,
Dev
