big fan of the way you write mental illness
Thank you! I put a lot of effort and attention into it. I have a white whale.
We are on the Mentally Illed Website, and I am hardly the only person here who cares about mental illness. That percolates into fanfic because writers write their own realities - ironically, it creates the average escapist unrealistic fanfic story. There's not a ton of fics that take an actual serious dive into mental illness, there are enough. Particularly - almost exclusively - depression, anxiety, and a certain kind of PTSD.
This post I wrote summarizes a lot of my feelings on it. It is actually something I feel strongly about, so please check it out.
There is a character I am trying to write. I have been trying to write him for a very long time. I have rewritten this character again and again and again, trying to get him right. I feel like I just can't do it.
Tim Drake in Reverse Robins; Ben in Less than Zero; Marc Spector in best life. They're circling That Thing I'm trying to do. And I feel like I'm never really getting it, because a lot of the audience never really seems to get it. For some reason, people seem to dislike him! Anyway, the conceit of the character is 'the most unlikable person you've ever met'.
Ben in Less Than Zero was explicitly to show the darker sides of PTSD. He had like three different kinds of PTSD in a trenchcoat, victim of an ethnic genocide, and he was insanely hateful to innocent people. People had issues sympathizing with him - and I'm facing the exact same issues rewriting him now. Marc in best life was a self-destructing, self-hating, alcoholic with little emotional intelligence and toxic coping mechanisms. And people were like, Hm, Just Eat Marc Spector. Tim in Reverse Robins overall had sympathy, but I'm overall unhappy with how I wrote him as well. (And people are ALWAYS very lenient with their sympathies for fanfic characters due to Blorbo Miasma, so if someone has little sympathy then it's pretty bad)(Except Bly, for misogyny crimes). I feel like there's something I really want people to understand, and I don't know if I'm conveying that. Maybe I don't even know what it is.
A horrible life makes you into an ugly person. Easy to swallow with a sympathetic villain, but surprisingly hard with an unsympathetic hero. Mental health issues hurt the people around you, and they twist you into an instinct of dysfunction and leave you with a mental framework of hurt and hatred. Mental illness makes you an asshole. It can make you do ugly and uncomfortable and stigmatized things, like substance abuse and/or self harm. I think I got kind of tired of reading easy victims. Because, of course, the writer's done nothing wrong.
There's a lot of media about this that does it all really well. I guess I want to do that, but I always feel like I'm saying something different. Not sure what it is, though. Russian Doll did it. God I love Russian Doll.
Yes, that's the mental illness I'm trying to show. I guess I'm trying to destigmatize it, except I'm not. I think I'm just constantly putting somebody in front of the reader and begging them to understand. Maybe I'm just begging them to forgive that person.
