Canada Day is just around the corner and as a white Canadian I feel the need to make this post.
I will not celebrate Canada day.
I am not proud of my country right now, and I haven't been for a while if I'm being honest with myself. Hundreds on indigenous children were found in mass graves, indigenous people in Canada are not treated with basic human rights, attacks on Asian, Pacific Islanders, Middle Eastern, and African Canadian people continue to happen with little to no consequence.
To celebrate Canada day would be celebrating murder, mass genocide, abduction, assimilation, rape, racism, xenophobia, corrupt policing, and corrupt governing.
I am incredibly sorry for all that First Nations peoples and POC that have suffered in Canada, but I know and accept that no amount of apologies will ever be enough for the people who have been hurt, assimilated, and broken. All that I can do is help to stand up for injustices by protesting, making donations to activist groups and charities, and signing petitions.
Please, my fellow Canadians, stand along side the First Nations peoples this Canada day and do not celebrate it. If you do, you will only be celebrating suffering and oppression.
