Get yourself a girl who can do both. Look scary and cute 💁♀️💁♀️💁♀️
Completed my first powerlifting competition today after the entirety of my training had gone sideways for the past month. It’s pretty cool being in a room filled with people that are just as hyped up about the same sport you are.
I really couldn’t of done it without my team, my coach and his wife for her bootcamp style workouts (thank you for helping me with my crappy cardio), but honestly my best friends (both of whom lifted with me today). I’m glad they had my back in helping me prepare for this and being my training partners - I really appreciate them being there for me. It was a gift getting to experience the hype and excitement first hand.
I’m really happy with my results, managed to make it into the 57kg weight class just under the wire (56.95kg is what I weighed in as). I might not of gotten 9/9 lifts but what I did get I’ll take! Accomplishing 130kg/286lbs for squat, 52.5kg/116lbs for bench, and 137.5kg/303lbs for deadlifts landed me a 320kg/704lbs total which is the amount needed to qualify for nationals in my weight class. It was the one goal I was hoping to get yesterday and I did it.
After having a chest cold and then turning around and catching Covid I knew I wasn’t going to be 100%. I knew I wasn’t going to break any personal records but that’s okay. I didn’t need to, but if there’s one thing I do have to say is that I’m excited to get back to the grind and get stronger. Hopefully next competition I do will yield better results. I want to push myself to my limits and I think I did pretty well considering I sat on my ass not hardly doing a damn thing for a week prior to thanks to having to isolate.
Getting to meet some of the province’s most well renowned lifters for myself was something super cool too. I really loved how sweet some of them were, it’s always nice to meet someone for yourself - not hold judgements on someone until you see them with your own eyes. That was one thing I enjoyed about the day - people are so inspiring and they definitely inspire me to do better as a lifter and perhaps as a person.
I guess until next time I’ll be working on reaching my long term goals. There’s a lot I want to accomplish and I’m absolutely stoked that I found a sport that I really enjoy considering I wasn’t really sporty growing up.
Either way, wish me luck!
Cheers! Happy lifting folks!
It’s been just over two weeks since I saw the inside of a gym. It was great to get back down since I could finally get to give my new deadlift socks that I got for Christmas some love. I have to admit everything felt like lead but the 122.5kg I did for a double for deads moved nicely, that surprised me since I figured it was going to be a grind to get up the weight but no.
So I’ll be starting back at powerlifting, see what I can do this year. I’m hoping to get a nice 70kg for bench (if I can get my noodle arms to go - hello accessories!), 160kg for squat, and maybe the same for deadlifts. I think that would be reasonable but hey maybe this year will be the year that I really get everything locked in and rolling again. I’m determined to make some new records for myself, I’ll be more than glad to take even some nice volume records.
It’s nice to still be able to get down to the grind even with the pandemic still going on. The govt here decided not to shut down the gyms even though we’ve gone into a bit of a soft lockdown, I’m okay with the modifications and the whole 25% capacity. It’s not like anybody is really training with me at 7am. The gym is always quiet at that hour so I’m happy with that, means I can fire up some tracks on the boom box without any interruptions.
I was going to compete this weekend but sadly that got canned. I have no idea if I will get the chance to compete this year (hopefully) but for now I’ll be working on just enjoying the journey, getting stronger, maybe a bit leaner (hello abs finally!), and working on some of my weaknesses while getting my form down pat. Nobody tells you at first but lifting is a huge learning curve, it’s not just strength, there’s a lot of technique to getting better at the sport.
I think one other thing I’ll be focusing on exercise wise besides my powerlifting is definitely going to be my hiking. I wanted to do more last year but fell into a nasty slump - not this year! I’ll be enjoying all the good weather I can get my hands on. Heck even this winter the weather has been reasonably cooperative so I might as well take advantage of that.
Happy lifting!
