i have just found out that christmas crackers are not a thing in america! just in the commonwealth. americans, weigh in if you like: are they totally unheard of?

they are paper parcels with a chemical in them that makes a loud snap as you pull it open, like the crack of a match. inside is (in my experience) a paper crown that you wear at christmas dinner, a bad joke to tell at the table, and a prize. this year i got a cat toy, last year a big fake diamond on a keyring.

Student Bodies Nostalgia - Ep.07 Companion Blog

It wasn't until recently that I realized that one of my favorite Canadianity shows growing up is turning 20 years old this year. That show, of course, is Student Bodies. While it only ran for 2 years from 1997-1999 on Canada's version of Nickelodeon, YTV, it has been a show that I have watched over and over.  So what makes it so great? First, the theme song.  One listen to this beaut and you will be humming it the rest of the day. It is infectious. I have often told my wife that the key to a good television show is whether I can get behind the theme song. For example, Grey's Anatomy has the worst theme ever. It is just a jingly, jangly mess. This song however is a 90's master piece. From the nasally "Student Bodies" back up singer to the way the singer really goes for the "get your body OUT that door." line. It is all great not to mention it is topped with the curt "Hey! It's not real life. It's high school." The song changed in later seasons but true fans remember and love the original. 

The theme, while great, isn't the only reason I love this show. It was the Canadian Saved by the Bell only way less campy. The show features animated sections that show the inner thoughts of the main character Cody. It was Lizzie Maguire before the "Duff Puff" was even a thing. The acting was smart but not too full of itself like other Canadian shows about high school. I'm looking at you Degrassi. 

Most of all, I love the characters. Nothing feels mailed in or trite here. They all have unique faults and follies which make them so relatable. Even the main antagonist, while slimy, has a serious story arch. From the push and pull of Cory and Shepard, the charisma and magnetism of Romeo to the it factor of Emily, every character has a great dynamic. Not to mention, it is just fun to relive the 90's. Big phones, baggy pants, weird hats, it's all there. 

It's a charming, funny show that surprisingly still holds up today. If you haven't watched it, a lot of the episode are on YouTube. They are worth a watch. It's small things like this that I love about Canada. This show is relatively unknown but talk to any Canadian my age and they'll tell you all about it. Canadianity at it's finest. In fact, there is a new Facebook group called Student Bodies 20 that is dedicated to celebrating the 20th anniversary of this show. They are trying to get a Student Bodies reunion together and I couldn't think of a cooler thing. Go show them some love.

Also, our most recent episode of the podcast is all about Canadian culture. I talked with an Americian, Chris Peterson about her experience moving to Canada. She shares some of her favorite Canadian things. If you haven't listened to you yet you should.

Ep.07 - Canadianity

This episode I am joined by Chris Peterson, an American who moved to Alberta a couple of years ago. We sit down and discuss her first impressions of moving to Canada. We also talk about her hatred of the DMV, how much she loves maple and I quiz her on how much she knows about Canada. 

I first met Chris at the rehearsal of a local community theater production of Guys and Dolls. We quickly bonded and she became a good friend. Even though we have drifted apart after the production, I'm glad I got to sit down with her and share a Canadian experience with her. She has a great sense of humour and some awesome stories about her first experiences in Canada.

This episode was very special to me because I have been binging the Taggert and Torrens podcast. They have such a great way of expressing their love of Canada and talking about "Canadianity". The things I would normally roll my eyes at, have, in the last few months, become things that I have started to really love. Chris and I battled through a bunch of technical difficulties but I think the end result captures some of the Canadianity that I've grown to love recently. I know that you are going to love this episode.
