A True Canadian

How can I even deny being Canadian and why would I want to? Tracking my social media use has made me realize how Canadian directed my content is. For example,

My Tiktok content “for you page” focuses a lot on different hikes or mountain scenery’s that people have done within Canada, especially British Columbia. People capture videos and pictures of the views they get to enjoy when accomplishing a hike. I really feel honoured to live in such a beautiful country. Tiktok influenced me to even go out on my very first hike this summer out by Nordegg Alberta. I am so glad my social media focuses on content within my own country.

I also get the opportunity to watch CTV news (Canadian Television) with my residents at work towards the end of my shift. We can easily gain Canadian information on Covid 19, and watching the news makes me feel grateful that I am living in Canada and not in the United States.

Even Facebook targets me with small Canadian business ads that I might be interested in. As stated in my last blog post, I mentioned that I prefer the new media over the traditional media because of how it targets an individual rather than whole population. I would definitely rather support a local Canadian (even Albertan) business than a multimillion dollar corporation that is known across the globe. I appreciate my social media accounts bringing me closer to fellow Canadians in that way. I have been able to purchase items such as jewelry or handmade house decorations from smaller Canadian made businesses and I think that is what being Canadian is all about-supporting each other in every way possible and social media plays an important role in making that happen.

Missing the Scotland Trip = Supporting My Scottish Friend!

So, while I wasn’t able to join my parents on their trip overseas thanks to our work shortage, it turns out it means I get to go to my BFF’s husband’s citizenship tomorrow.  She met him when we were living in Edinburgh together  (I was doing my Masters and she took advantage of her Right to Abode thanks to her British-born mom) and in addition to being her husband, he’s also been a good friend of mine for a decade now.  Last week, he asked if I could make a BBQ on a night I usually work, so I was all “um, after eight, if I’m not too tired” so he admitted he was taking his citizenship test and that it was actually going to be his citizenship party.

So, I may not be in Scotland right now, but it means I won’t be abroad when my favourite Scot gets his shiny new Canadian citizenship (and keeps the Scottish one, as dual citizenship is recognized here). He officially passed his test and is sworn in tomorrow morning.

 It also means I can join my friends in plotting our own citizenship “tests” and “ceremony” for the barbecue. For example, one friend will be making him a maple leaf crown. He will also have to recite a Canadian pledge from a scroll (it will say “I’m sorry”). I have made a quiz for him, which we will make him do. Then we will teach him the “secret Canadian handshake” (while of course sending those yet to be citizens out of the room). He may be required to wear a flag as a cape.

So while I am sorry to miss out on a trip, I am glad that this is working out.

Apparently we're going to see a play directed by Atom Egoyan tonight (boyfriend's parents' season tickets) and maybe to see a friend's band at the Silver Dollar Room tomorrow. Oh, Toronto, never change.
