It’s easy, in the end, to blackmail the man Gwendolyn used to work for. Mildred can barely hide her distain, even as the plan works. Many photos of the man with women, his hands all over them. Not just Gwendolyn, or Mildred, but the patients. Charlotte Wells for one. So they used the photos, got the sentencing reduced for the man Mildred once called her brother, he won’t be fried, but he will die. The man almost escapes, of course, as a product of Mildred’s own meddling, until Mildred found a way to blackmail him. Her brother had loved Dolly, after all. So she had told him leaving her to wait for him alone was a crime, a crime on top of so many others he had already committed. So he agreed. Mildred’s night terrors don’t stop, not completely, not at first, but as time passes where she now lives with Gwendolyn, she begins to heal as much as the woman she loves, finding peace in Gwendolyn and her gentleness. The need for blackmail is, at last, over.
