a collection of many asks about theories. I again won't say one way or another on the theories themselves, but I will say that Lain's birth family is dead/out of the picture and don't matter. All of Lain's familial bonds are adopted, which doesn't make them any lesser (he definitely doesn't treat them that way), nor does it make what the King did to him okay, but they're not tied by blood.
OOOOHHHH OMG plEEEEASE tell us abt the coraline GF au.... it's been forever since I've seen coraline so I can't ask that many good questions. I wanna know about it soooo bad that movie scared me shitless as a kid
I'D LOVE TO TELL YOU
Right here under this lovely little cut:
Ok basics: Mabel is the Coraline of this au, obviously. She and Dipper have been shipped up to Oregon to stay with Ford for a while (He and Stan are a little younger to fit the parents from Coraline better, so Ford's an uncle here.) Mabel and Dipper have heard in vague allusions between family members that the cabin that Ford lives in now was one that he and his parents stayed in for a vacation or something like that, and that their father thinks that Ford buying the place isn't good for him. They have no context for why. It might have something to do with the fact that Ford immediately warns them away from playing in the woods the minute they get there.
Mabel tries to be optimistic about the stay, but while Ford and Dipper hit it off pretty well, Ford isn't as great with her. He often goes quiet around her, like he's thinking of something else, and sometimes doesn't seem to even like looking at her. Between that, the fact that Dipper's time is eaten up by Ford, and the fact that the cabin isn't close to any houses with people her age (and the people who are around are odd and don't have much time for her), means that Mabel swiftly grows very, very lonely.
So she wanders the house, trying to find things to do. And during her search she finds a small trap door in the wall with a funny design of a triangle carved into it.
And when she opens it, she tumbles through a strange tunnel straight into another version of the cabin with a man with buttons for eyes that claims to be her "Other Uncle Stanford!" Uncle Stan for short. He tells her that this is a version of the world just for her, and he does his best to entertain her alongside the Other Dipper.
Mabel's having a great time! So great that she tries to bring Dipper along, but when she tries to show him the trap door it's locked, and when they unlock it, it's just a normal door. Dipper tells her to stop playing around.
Well, fine! She doesn't care! She'll go have fun with Uncle Stan and Other Dipper!
But the more she talks to them and the other residents of the Other World, the more unsettled she gets. It doesn't seem utterly perfect at all. And soon enough she desperately, desperately wants to leave.
In the real world, Ford and Dipper get worried.
CHARACTER ALIGNMENTS:
Mabel - Coraline :)
Stan - Other Father and Other Mother. The general charm of the Other Mother, but the level of autonomy of Other Father. He's still more of a real person than anyone else in the Other World. For some reason :)
Ford - The normal parents, and also Wybie's grandmother. He's still a paranormal researcher, but there's a level of grimness to his research.
Dipper - Wybie! And Other Dipper is Other Wybie.
Beldam - Bill Ciper
These are less fleshed out but they're what I'm working with:
Fiddleford - Mr. Bobinsky. Raccoons instead of mice! He's a complete nervous wreck and hermit who lives in a ramshackle hut. He tells Mabel that there is something evil in this place, but can't explain why he won't leave.
Blubs and Durland - Miss Forcible and Miss Spink. Instead of burlesque they're incredibly into vaudeville acts.
HI HELLO I'M BACK! I have a question about an extremely strange cat my mom had YEARS ago.
Meet Jasmine, and on the right, one of her sons, Tangman! I'm sorry for the absolute dogshit image. It's the only one either of us have ever been able to find, and it's a picture of a screen.
My mom has always described her as "mysteriously pink and grey." They found her on the side of the road in the Donovan area (Ontario, Canada) as a stray kitten. She had two litters of kittens I believe, and we don't know the fathers. She had a few extremely pale pale ginger kittens like Tangman, one EXTREMELY red orange kitten, a single female kitten who looked exactly like her but passed away after a week, and then these SUPER long haired puffy silverish grey and white kittens that had little brownish red patches on their chins that my mom describes as "not quite tortishell but the spots weren't grey like the rest."
Jasmine and her kittens have all long since passed away, and for my mom's entire life since she has always wondered what the hell was up with Jas! According to my mom, back when she lived there (late 90s to early 00s) the Donovan had a LOT of really unique stray cats around, but she'd never seen any like Jasmine. My best theory is that she was sunshine silver, but she wasn't a siberian cat as far as my mom could tell (she was also very famously Small) and I believe all of her orange kittens were boys? I figured if anyone could solve the mystery it'd be you!
Oh wow, very interesting... Let's see if I can make any headway on this mystery, this is a bizarre one!
Bimetallic (sunshine silver, as you say) isn't impossible and, from appearance alone, is a very good guess. Indeed she does look blue bimetallic from the (admittedly crusty) pic. But that's such an incredibly rare color, even within the Siberian breed, that I really doubt a stray would be that color, esp if no other strays in the area were...and her kittens tell us a different story.
Her litters were mixed ginger & non-ginger. You say that the males were red which means that she definitely has an O allele. It sounds like the silvery kittens were black-based; that means that she had both O and o alleles. So if that's true, she was definitely a tortie, possibly with just very strange patterning. I think this is the most likely explanation.
But if the "brownish-red patches" were ginger and those kittens were actually torties, then she may have been O/O. In whichcase I have no idea what's going on. It's best not to assume "novel mutation" or the like for occam's razor reasons but it DOES happen...
There is such a thing is "blue-tipped red" which is a weird and unexplained thing that happens to ginger cat sometimes, where they're born with bluish paws/faces. This doesn't look like that at all, but we know that pheomelanin-based cats can have weird mutations or developmental oddities that cause bluishness; it's not unheard of.
Most likely, though, and unless we get more info, I'm going to say she's probably a very interesting torbie :3
Mabel cracked open an eye as she felt something pat at her face. A soft plush arm was tapping a little south of her ear. It retracted when she responded to it.
A blue plush kitten stared back at her with black glassy eyes. Old and worn. She'd gotten it as a little kid, she knew, with a matching red dog that had gone to...
"Hi, Dipper," she whispered. The cat stared. It couldn't really do anything else.
Her brother's ghost tilted the head of the cat plush in a vague attempt to display emotion. She wasn't sure how he was doing it, if he held the head in one ghostly hand and tilted it like that or if he was in the plush, tilting his head like he would his own. She didn't know exactly what he meant by it.
"I'll get up," she told him.
I'll get back to work, she meant.
Her brother wasn't dead. All the little tubes running up into his face in the hospital showed he wasn't. But he wasn't alive, either.
There had to be something that told her what this was. How to fix it. Grunkle Stan had told her he was going to fix it, but Grunkle Stan had lied about a lot of things, like that he didn't know about the supernatural, or that he was Stanford Pines at all, or that there wasn't something going on with the author of the Journals, or that Dipper was totally fine after he fell from the upper beams of the theatre, see, pumpkin, he's breathing, ain't he--?
He lied a lot, was the point.
But that was fine. Either Grunkle Stan would fix it or Mabel would fix it. And then Dipper would be back.
That was the important part.
Mabel got up from the bed. She really, really, really didn't want to. She wanted to sleep like Dipper looked like he was sleeping in the hospital bed.

HI VOLKSWAGEN WE LOVE U VOLKSWAGEN !!!!!!! Tell us . About the last 3 dogs you have met
..You do..?
Er- yeah, sure. Dogs! I've met a few in my time, I like the soft ones.
Last week I met one named Jinkies, he looked like Scooby Doo!! He had Scooby Doo's collar!!! Do you have any idea how happy that made Ford!? AND HIS OWNER HAD THOSE GRAHAM CRACKER SCOOBY SNACKS!! I almost came undone, I got so excited. Steven and Ford both like Scooby-Doo. He was really cute!
One time when I was filling in for Steven at the counter someone let me pet their seeing-eye dog, she was a yellow lab named Bella! Pretty generic, but in my opinion it's popular for a very valid reason. Her fur was so soft.. And she smelled really clean, too. Jinkies smelled like dirt and garbage.
Then the third most recent, uh, it was a pug. I ran away from it. Tch- no, I walked away from it! Really quickly. Shh! Stop! I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, pugs are horrible. I'm not afraid of pugs!
ANOTHER NAME PERSON!!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!! I offer up the names of some of my more main/important characters in their various stories! Both protagonists and antagonists alike!
Raccoon’sight
Snow'pelt/Snow'star
Jay'smog
Siika'fang
Chickadee'stone (uncertain about this one and any suggestions welcome, I find long names really hard to pair!)
Wood'ears
Lumen'light (I know cats don't know what lumens are </3)
Silver'hare
Ossein'skull (also open to changing this one, suffix is only because of face markings!)
Berry'gaze (my basic king)
hehe yes hello!! happy to see more people here :D some interesting names in here!
— Raccoonsight: 5 — i like raccoon- and -sight is alright to go with it
—Snowpelt/Snowstar: 3 — a generic background character name. simple names like this just aren’t really my style
— Jaysmog: 4 — -smog is a suffix im unsure on, it can easily be a derogatory name. assuming it’s not, though, it goes alright with jay- but i’d probably have stuck to something like -fog or -smoke for the same idea
— Siikafang: 8 — i like how the unique prefix goes with the more common suffix here
— Chickadeestone: 3 — i don’t really like -stone here, but chickadee- is a good prefix! i agree about pairing long prefixes. it’s hard to suggest names without knowing how they look/act, but for some ideas, i’d say maybe -perch, -pebble, -storm, -seed, -pit (like in fruits), -burr, -cobble? the two-syllable suffixes flow best to me, but those are all names with similar vibes
— Woodears: 5 — not bad, but a bit of an unusual combination. still, it’s unique enough and i can imagine the cat who bears this name!
— Lumenlight: 7 — lumen- is cool! however, i think it’s kind of redundant to pair it with -light, considering lumen is a measurement of light. i guess it really depends on if specifically whoever named this cat knows what a lumen is! regardless, it sounds alright
— Silverhare: 6 — cool imagery and i like this pairing!
— Osseinskull: 5 — interesting prefix, but again i think maybe this one is a bit redundant, being two bone related words? the name is also a bit edgier than my tastes haha. if you’d like suggestions, then maybe -mask, -face, or -trace to still reference the face marks. -shade or -shadow also came to mind
