This is a piece of uranium glass! Uranium glass (also known as canary or Vaseline glass) has a distinct yellow or green color. The production of uranium glass began in the 1830s and ended sometime during the Cold War. In most pieces of uranium glass, there’s only a trace amount of uranium. Uranium glass can be identified by it’s signature green or yellow color, and it’s fluorescence under UVA light.
In general, as with all glass collecting, it’s best to be thoughtful and cautious. As I said, there’s generally not enough uranium to be considered dangerous, but ultimately it’s up to you if you feel safe to collect it. For the most part, as long as you don’t ingest or inhale the glass, you should be okay.
