 These days, anyone with a half decent smartphone can put some photos on a website and start  advertising themselves to potential clients.

 When you are looking for a qualified Canberra photographer, there are three things to look out for.

Awards/qualifications – A good photographer doesn’t necessarily need to have studied the craft at university but you might want to check if they are accredited by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), the country’s leading photography organisation. You can also ask if they have won or been nominated for any awards. These show they are committed to their field and not simply trying to make a few dollars following a hobby.

Areas of expertise – A photographer who is excellent at weddings might not be as skilled taking portraits and an event photographer may struggle to get good nature shots. Always ask the photographer for examples of work that relates to the occasion you are hiring them for. You can usually find a portfolio on their website.

Creativity – This characteristic can be difficult to measure, but the most obvious way for you to notice this is during an initial consultation. You want someone who uses their experience and knowledge to improve your ideas instead of only taking direction.
