If you are thinking of leaving Spotify behind as a New Year’s Resolution, Indivisible has some information about why you might want to do that and how.

I can understand hanging on to morally complicated vendor relationships. We have not figured out as a family how to completely divorce ourselves from the big box stores on a permanent basis. I held on to my Pandora subscription for way longer than I felt good about. We depend on tech equipment that is built with conflict minerals. No ethical consumption etc. Shame has limited utility.

On the other hand, maybe we can be inspired by joy and creativity as we find new solutions to some of those complexities.

We humans create our lives one moment at a time, so if there is a change you want to make that would help you feel more congruent in your values going forward, I want you to have support for making that change.

Bandcamp isn’t a 1:1 replacement for Spotify, but it is worth checking out as another way to stream music, discover new bands, and support working artists. I enjoy listening to my favorites in the app.

looks like im cancelling spotify for all the reasons everyone else is, and while i have my listening needs taken care of (bandcamp, physical media, etc) the biggest loss for me is definitely music discovery. anyone have recommendations for artists, blogs, critics, zines, and music curation of any type worth taking a look at? i listen to a wide swath of genres, lately a lot of ninajirachi, tatsuro yamashita, charli xcx, joey valence and brae, several local indie rock artists, and always keeping underscores, ginger root, kero kero bonito, and 100 gecs in the rotation

I’ve switched over to Tidal (you can sign up for a free trial for a month, and if you are okay with paying $2 they will extend that for you to two months at sign up, which I thought was def worth it) and it’s great. Works very similar, pretty much the same song catalogue. It’s pretty much the same price (if not slightly cheaper than Spotify). And there are a lot of services that’ll help you convert your Spotify playlists to Tidal.

So, yeah. Fuck these assholes.

if you somehow haven't cancelled spotify over being funded by and divesting in blood money, maybe their purchase and integration of whosampled should finally get you to do it and here's why:

whosampled is a user driven sample snitching website largely contributed to by culture ignorant white online nerds who think they're doing a public service which disproprtionately punishes people working within historically black genres. people get crazy granular with this stuff and will snitch snares or drum fills from particular pieces of music which, generally speaking, does not merit a replacement for the original work or warrant a normal clearing process; however, if you have a this on a platform as big as spotify and link directly to those other works, this is a step towards loss of any fair use in sampled works and could result in many many songs suddenly getting copyright claimed after years and years from musicians who do not make a lot of money off of their works as is. this is the boldest anti-artistry stance spotify has ever taken under an innocuous guise of user experience. in practice, this looks like a lot less profit to black artists and a completely harmful dismantling of tradition within the genre. sample snitching was always considered one of the hugest faux pas within the culture for this reason and allowing spotify that power is awful for music. this not only impacts living artists and up and coming producers, but it could also look like MF Doom and J Dilla's estates not receiving any royalties for their seminal works among many others, and that's just scraping the surface. some music labels or media companies (reminder: music isn't all that's sampled! film, television and video games do as well) may send cease and desists and keep works within the underground hip-hop scene from being available beyond just the implications of streaming which, reminder, is largely filled with the most articulate and brilliant speakers on social issues in music today. I WONDER WHY THEY WOULD WANT THAT??? HMMMMM. I WONDER...

fuck spotify, fuck whosampled. if you recognize a sample, no you didn't. keep it to yourself, and buy your favorite musicians' music directly physically or through bandcamp where they can't take it away from you.

Just bought a bunch of CDs to rip to my computer (and maybe I'm buying a CD player?) and cancelled Spotify premium. Had a bit of fun writing my reason for cancelling in the "other (specify)" box.

I hate that you have put the prices up while making your deal worse for artists who are just starting out. I can buy several CDs every month and at the end of the year have spent less to support artists more and actually own the music I have paid for. Your model is becoming increasingly exploitative of artists and audiences and you should be ashamed but the worst part is that you won't be.

Looks like Splotify has really stepped in it. They actually stopped people from cancelling due to the volume of cancel requests. I useta dig watching Rogan but he keeps slipping further and further into the muck and being a schmuck. The guy's a squillionaire who can afford the best treatments known to man and then turns around and tells all the punters: "Be like me! Don't worry about it! It's really not a big deal."
