we must always keep in mind that the avid/shelby/drift polycule is completely and utterly doomed. Avid is pining over his 1400 year old vampire crush, shelby is the 25 year old self-appointed youngest daughter of her little found nuclear family and drift is learning wonderful new things every day, such as “huh, maybe my abuser is #LiterallyNice.” They all encourage eachothers worst habits forever and ever because they all have the same defense mechanism of increasingly romaticizing their situations* and realistically none of them are helping the others with their problems. Shelby and drift think avidscott is cute or whatever because challenging that notion would simultanously challenge their OWN faulty beliefs. Drift and avid play along with shelby’s whole family thing because it helps them ease into the coven as an idea, which supports their own romanticization of said idea. Avid and shelby are ecstatic to spend the rest of vampire eternity with their friend drift!! Never mind how she became a vampire in the first place.
* extradiegetically this stems from all three CCs simply attempting to tell much more lighthearted stories than, say, apo or pyro or owen or legs. Which um. doesn’t always work?? especially because the general theme of the entire smp is all over the place which, frankly, makes these cute fluffy hopecore queer allegory stories seem flimsy and fake, like a facade the character is putting on rather than what their story is Actually About. Which tbh I like!!! It makes them messy and interesting albeit insanely frustrating.
