applerot, but it's apo writing cleo a letter the night before she and cherri have their planned death. apo writes about how they're finally content with life and that they hope that cleo knows they loved her. she's not sorry for dying, though, because a life without cherri is not a life at all for apo. the letter ends with apo leaving a kiss on the page for cleo. that will be the last thing cleo will ever have of apo.

Starting off canon! Apo calls Cherri "beloved", "love" and "my lady" in the series, but I think we should add "dear", "dearest", “blossom”/“my blossom” and of course, "sunshine" for maximum Gay Emotional Damage

Pyro

I'm thinking Pyro would get "sweetness" and "pretty boy" (also "pretty girl" if we wanted to get fun with it) and the good ol fashioned "puddin'"

I'm also strangely fond of "cygnet" (a cygnet is a baby swan. btw) because it's cute and also something something the ugly duckling was never an ugly duckling it was a swan being judged by the standards of ducks. you get it

Legs

In my heart, Legs really likes petnames. He'd never tell you that though, because of The Guilt and masculine sterotypes but also mostly The Guilt

anyway Apo calls him "honey" and "darling" and "sugar" and “pretty baby” and “peaches”

I think these two would be a “no petnames” couple for a bit and then suddenly a switch gets flicked and Abolish starts getting hit with “pretty boy” and “little prince”/“my prince” and “pretty baby” and sometimes “raven”/“my raven”

Shelby

these two are absolutely a case of “princess” (derogatory) to “princess” (sexually charged). I know this in my heart

Shelby also gets “bunny”, “sugarplum” and sometimes teasingly “peanut”

Avid

Apo calls him “princess” and “sweet pea” and sometimes “angelface” or “ducky”

Drift

Drift gets “little prince”/“my prince” etc and “pumpkin” and “darling” and “lovebug”

I think Apo would jokingly call them “sugar tits” lmao—

Drift doesn’t use petnames for a while, but eventually starts calling them “my lady”/“m’lady” and even more eventually “pretty bird”/“pretty girl”

Cleo takes to calling Apo “Apple” and that is…about it

This two are just so obsessed with each other in a bad way. Their perspectives are so opposed but they still need the other to 'see the light' even though every time they try it turns into an argument that makes everyone in the room feel like they're third-wheeling a failing marriage.

It could be enemies to lovers, but during episodes 3 and 4 when these 2 had that solidarity with each other their dynamic was so interesting, both being victims of the coven (particularly Scott) and almost standing together. That fact that they had a falling out and ended up hating each other is just a bonus that makes their dynamic more spicy

Yuri so toxic it’s radioactive They hate each other so much they need to kiss about it Really tho they both have a sardonic, sarcastic sense of humor, are ruthless survivors, and will not hesitate to end anyone who threatens their beloved

People sleep on the fact that V!Cleo hated the way V!Apo almost was trusted entirely by all vampires before her as V!Cleo then sabotaged V!Apo chances to like being a vampire and be accepted as one. They could have been enemies to lovers

SO TOXIC YURI. they cant STAND each other. the tension between them at the end of ep 4 on the way to the ruined tower with legundo is PALPABLE. they cant STAND the way the other is going about their situation. i love them so dearly. please everyone get more rottenapple toxic yuri pilled itd be beneficial for society 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

I could go on and on about their relationship but tbh just their divorced energy does it for me. They act like exes it's so entertaining to me. Whenever someone breaks up their fighting both of them are like "it's nothing…we're fine" like okay did Scott file the divorce papers lmao??? Absolute peak everyone is sleeping on it

Realistically ofc I don’t think they could ever be healthy together, but I really love the idea of two individuals who crave belonging with very opposite views and ideals absolutely RUINING eachother. Optimism vs. Pessimism a tale as old as time. Owen in the beginning, while willing to indulge, had no genuine faith in the coven. But yet as it progressed, there was these desperate moments of trying to keep coven members like Shelby close by by isolating her, tampering with avids message, even keeping the skull left inside because he would rather hold on to it in death then see Shelby see avid in any sort of redeeming light. CC!Owen on Twitter even mentioned that if Shelby were to try and excommunicate him from the family he would’ve thrown it at her feet and tell her that he was “Protecting” her (yk like a liar..). And Shelby, someone who didn't want to hurt anybody and saw the coven as a source of comfort and trust, eventually saw violence as something inevitable and even killed her own coven member due to Owen’s influence and actions. During the beach confrontation with Cleo, Pearl, and drift she defends him and believes that she can get through to him and that there’s smth good in him. Don’t even talk to me about the whole bridge scene, “would he have feared the monster he created?” (FUCK HIM UP SHELBY!!). Also call this a reach but I’d like to think That Owen saw so much of Louis in Shelby… They’re Kindness and somewhat gracious acceptance, her slightly naive pacifism and wanting to coexist with the humans, her loyalty to those she cares about and them even TURNING another sick man (avid) BECAUSE they care for them.. and if said the importance of “Fire” in Shelby’s narrative… anyways long useless rant I just think they’re dynamic is very interesting and has so much potential ^^

tbey have some weird crazy toxic relationship going on idk. owen is constantly actively manipulating shelby into staying with the coven and shelby is ignoring all the obvious red flags. i think they should get even weirder with it

she's like, the one person Owen genuinely cares for.. also he's a long-haired, morally-questionable, dead-wife(husband)-having, angsty dark romance boyfriend.. you cannot tell me Shelby wouldn't be interested

Shelby tries her best to see the best in Owen until the very end, and she was one of the only humans that Owen admitted to liking, the only one in the first episode. Owen also continues to like Shelby, this is stated multiple times as being the only reason that he doesn’t harm her. Just imagine Shelby’s heart shattering upon learning that not only her friend, her fledgling had died, but he was also killed by the man she admired and secretly crushed on

The reason applerot is Like That is because you’re mixing Cleo’s rigid yet hypocritical worldview and Apo’s terrible girlfailure decision making. Like. Cleo’s defining characteristic imo is their incredible emotionally immaturity (although they don’t present that way) and how they cling to a set of ‘rules’ to understand the world around them, instead of inquiring deeper about WHY things are the way they are. If something is wild and unpredictable, it’s bad. If something follows the code and/or benefits Cleo or Pearl, it’s good. Which is interesting because it’s black and white thinking, but it’s not even very good black-and-white thinking! They’re completely okay with aligning themself with people who have slaughtered thousands and are planning to slaughter even more if it means they and Pearl will be safe. Now, Apo on the other hand, is very much trying to be a Good Person (at least for most of the series until her goal suddenly shifts to “get back to Cherri at all costs”) but doesn’t have set rules to follow. Evident by her dramatic shift in goal post ep 6, there doesn’t seem to be set lines that she isn’t willing to cross. However, every time she does something unexpected for her character, it’s because of the extreme stress and pressure she’s under. From accepting Scott’s deal and letting herself be turned, to killing truffle, to choosing to align herself with the vamps for like 5 seconds in episode 7, these are not choices that she would’ve made otherwise. But Cleo doesn’t see that! When they look at Apo, they fail to question her deeper motives or take into account the situations others have put her in. To her, Apo is a girl who doesn’t know what she wants, acts irrationally, and makes decisions she later claims to regret. Add a little bit of Cleo’s confrontational behavior and we get these terrible terrible moments in the finale where they’re calling her out in front of the militia for things that she didn’t mean or consent to and actively ignoring her side of the story. 

Tl,dr Cleo’s fundamental misunderstanding of Apo is what makes the two of them incredibly compelling. Toxic applerot forever and ever.
