Forever a summer girl… 🐚 I landed in Winnipeg late last night. The weather in London for the four days that I was there was such a gift - not summery, but a far cry from the cold that we experience on the prairies at this time of year. When I walked out of the airport into the snow, it wasn’t the end of the world, exactly - but it was the start of a countdown that I do every year, from the first snowfall until the spring melt. A countdown to the return of the seasons that I love the most, that make me feel joyful and alive, namely, summer ✨ #candvonspetses (at Spétses, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck_WUv3LpxE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
I collect rocks, and seashells. Little pieces of the places I’ve been, souvenirs of foreign landscapes, so different from the ones that are familiar to me. The weight of a rock in the palm is a reminder that we are, and will remain, whole, no matter where the waves push us, no matter how the current of life shapes us - we may change, but we are always whole. Shells, former homes, abandoned by their residents despite their beauty, demonstrate that we can move on, that we are not tied to places that we no longer fit into. The proof that what you’re telling yourself is true is all around you, if you know where to look for it 🤍 #candvonspetses (at Spétses, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkqYsRFrW3G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Dear Body, You are not perfect - but why should you have to be? It’s not perfection that makes someone worthy of love. Real love is understanding and accepting that flaws are part of the whole of anything, and loving those flaws along with everything else. It’s taken me a long time to feeling willing, or able, to give that kind of love to you. I learned from books and magazines and well-meaning adults that your imperfection meant there was something wrong with me, and I blamed you for that, but not anymore. We’re in this together 🤍 #candvonspetses PS: Swipe right for the excerpt from A Brief History of Curating by Hand Ulrich Obrist, taken from his interview with Lucy Lippard, that inspired these words and continues to inspire many more. Everything will happen to you - beauty, and terror, just like Rilke said, even if you don’t want to let it. No feeling is final, but the ones that stay with you, the terrors that you live with and carry, are, in their own way, the beauty, too, because of how they shape you, like a sculptor’s chisel. Not define, just shape. And you are a masterpiece, darling. Every curve and edge. #candvonspetses (at Spétses, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjsezzQLZRZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
“No artist tolerates reality.” - Friedrich Nietzsche And why would, or should we, when we can create something better? Defining the reality you want, creating a life that you love, on your own terms, is always worthwhile.
