So usually I send asks because I like hearing your opinion on things, but this time I'm looking for some serious dialogue: How Many Players Are Too Many For A Group? In the post-PAX East enthusiasm a number of newcomers have petitioned to join my meatspace gaming group, more than doubling its size from 4 to 9. What's better(worse?), so far everyone is interested in at least two of the campaigns being run (Eberron/Only War/Dark Heresy). I'm not sure if it's sustainable. Any helpful experience?
In my experience, the Perfect Player Party Proportion is four.
Four being the best number for a group for various reasons:
If a person can’t make it, it’s easy to run a game with three.
If another person wants to join, running a game with five PCs isn’t impossible. Being said, I regularly run a game with five players.
In that regard, I would tend to stray away from anything after five. For all intents and purposes, corralling five people into seeing one, focused topic is hard enough. The GM to Player ratio of 1:5 is strong enough to tell a cohesive story without losing personal interaction or focus.
If there are that many people that want to play a game, encourage one of them to start playing. GMs need more people in their army! We are massively outnumbered.
Really, I can’t see running a game with more than five people without some headache involved, and my dream number is always four.
My best advice, either find the time to run two groups, or have someone else take on the reigns. One person can only handle so much.
