Plant of the Day

A beautiful grove of Betula papyrifera (paper birch, white birch, canoe birch) in the snow. This deciduous tree is a native to the cold climates of Canada and Alaska with its range dipping down into a few of the northern U.S. states. The white bark exfoliates in papery strips to reveal the orange-brown inner bark and as the tree matures it develops black markings on the white bark. This tree has traditionally been used for making birch bark canoes.
