Warren Spector Thinks Deus Ex Is Too Real For 2021

The Game Developers Conference kicked off today as a week of virtual talks. In a live chat alongside a rebroadcast of his 2017 GDC talk, Deus Ex designer Warren Spector talked about why he wouldn’t make the game today.

“I’m constantly amazed at how accurate our view of the world ended up being. Frankly it freaks me out a bit,” Spector wrote. Later he continued, “Interestingly, I’m not sure I’d make Deus Ex today. The conspiracy theories we wrote about are now part of the real world. I don’t want to support that.”

buuut he also says

“I’d actually love to make a new Deus Ex game but the property is now the property of Square Enix so that ain’t gonna happen,” he wrote. He did however write, “Spiritual successors to Deus Ex are basically all I’m interested in making.”

The 14-day rule: a stumbling block to progress

This morning, I saw this on my dashboard. This afternoon, the argument of "pro-birth not pro-life" struck me deep enough to temporarily re-examine my philosophical position. I'm mostly pro-life, and pro-choice at heart; I support baby hatches/baby boxes, think innocently of women who have gotten abortions (after all, I don't blame their choice, only that the abortionists' hands are wet with blood), condemn the social stigma attached to birth control, such as vasectomies and condoms. I am also childfree. There is a little known "bioethical" rule that is more hypocrisy than humility. It is the 14 day rule and it prohibits embryological research beyond 14 days. Every waking moment, it torments my mind with its sheer absurdity. Why so restrictive? are you disgusted about feeling like Frankenstein when you do embryology to zygotes 15+ days old but dying a "'natural' death" with abortion far beyond that arbitrary restriction is okay? Are you even more disgusted by the implication of possibility of saving lives with these (such as uterine cancer-stricken pregnant women who want to keep their baby alive) and creating an unprecedented era of choice for women? As a transhumanist who wishes to obsolete the dilemma that has cost countless lives, or at the very least offer women more choice over their bodies (I'm mostly pro-life), this law stands in the way of progress.
