Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, York, Maine. Perhaps the most famous resident of Nubble Light was Mr. T, the 20 pound ginger-striped tom cat. He occupied the small offshore island in the 1930s and 40s, under the watch of multiple lighthouse keepers. According to keeper Eugene Coleman, after Mr. T had killed all the mice on the island, the cat swam over to the mainland and returned with a fresh mouse.

Nubble Supermoon Cape Neddick, York, Maine Sept. 8, 2014

Last night I met up with Matt Milone (Nightmute Photography) at Nubble Light for the last supermoon of 2014. It was clear all day but clouds moved in before sunset and we only saw the moon a couple brief times through the clouds. However we did manage to have an incredible sunset! Photos from that are coming soon. As any photographer who's tried to shoot the moon knows, when it's dark or near dark out (a while after sunset) it's impossible to get a single exposure with detail in the moon and detail in the foreground, the moon is just too bright so the foreground will be really dark if you expose for the moon. So as is normal with moon shots like this, this is a blend of two photos, one exposure for the foreground and one for the moon. The moon is then blended into the foreground photo to make it look much more like it did to my eye, seeing some detail in the moon with detail in the foreground. This is a vertical crop from a horizontal shot at 200mm. The foreground was f/5.6 at ISO 400 for 1/4 sec, the moon is f/5.6 at iso 400 for 1/10 of a sec. I should have taken a cleaner shot of the foreground at a lower ISO and longer exposure but I was in a real hurry to get the shot before the moon moved too far, it rises fast!
