These ducks are found in open wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa, mainly in the south and southwest of the continent. Their varied diet includes aquatic plants, insects, crustaceans, and small vertebrates. They nest on the ground, in dense vegetation near water. Females incubate the eggs, but both parents care for the ducklings.
