Pear Alley @ Batemans NT Sussex by Adam Swaine Via Flickr: The garden team have recently restored Pear Alley. Located at the bottom of the orchard this is a metal hooped structure, 20 metres in length spanning a paved pathway originally created by Rudyard Kipling circa 1905. As the name suggests, the structure was planted with espaliered pear trees, trained to grow over the metalwork, adorned with white pear blossom in April and golden dropping pears in autumn. In more recent years, narrow borders were created, with low perennial groundcover plants growing underneath the pear trees.

During this time, they may look scruffy or bald, stay quiet, and hide in bushes.This little fella was in the bush in the NT cafe while i was having a cuppa i waited for 2 mins then he perched on the chair for me super little local wildlife resident!

The Lily Pond and Rose Garden @ Batemans NT Sussex by Adam Swaine Via Flickr: The rose garden and lily pond were designed by Kipling and his drawing is on display in the house. The Rose Garden was replanted in 2007, as the original plants were slowly dying. The new roses were sponsored by members of the public in memory of people who have worked at Bateman's, from Kipling's time to the present day, or to commemorate a special visit here.
