The Smews are in town! – Unfortunately, they're a bit camera-shy and far away ;-).

the smew is a species of duck, and the only living member of their genus (mergellus). the smew is found in europe and the paleartic, living primarily along lakes and slow-moving rivers. smew are easily distinguished from other ducks by the male’s panda-like black and white coloration; females have a grey body and chestnut-colored cap, and are sometimes referred to as the ‘red-headed smew’ despite being the same species. these ducks are talented fishers and feed almost entirely on aquatic prey. they also nest in abandoned woodpecker cavities; ducklings leave the nest a mere ten days after hatching.
Smew Duck is day 25 of #gigglebirds hosted by @printyourbird @wingingitdrawing and @paints_and_penguins - a #birdartchallenge for immature audiences only.
