I’ve long been intrigued by the concept of a Capsule Wardrobe. I don’t know that I have the patience to put one together, and I like some things that are a little too funky to work with it. Regardless of either of these things though, I’ve felt for a long time that my wardrobe didn’t have a sense of style -- I just wear jeans and T-shirts. I’ve been saying for years that I need to re-vamp my wardrobe, but I never do it, because I have perfectly good clothes, and my closet is full enough.
Last night, I thought, maybe the first step to re-vamping my wardrobe, is to strip it down to bare bones. I filled an entire small filing box with t-shirts. Since I live in the Pacific Northwest, most of my clothes are pretty all-season -- it’s just a matter of whether you layer other things over them. So, I’m going to go through my closet and reduce it to the following:
1. Enough tops that I can wear one each day of the week to work, and not have a repeat day. I already own just one pair of slacks that I wear every day, and I don’t think anyone notices or cares.
2. Enough t-shirts that I have one for each day of the week. Absolutely no more than 9.
3. Workout Clothes -- I aim to work out three times a week, so in order not to do laundry more than once a week that means 3 workout shirts, 3 sports bras, 3 pairs of workout pants. Everything else should go.
4. Pajamas. ...Perhaps a bit TMI but more often than not, I sleep in my underwear. I should reduce my Pajamas to 2 sets of Cold Weather, 1 set of moderate weather, and 2 night shirts.
5. Jackets - I should reduce my coat collection to 1 winter coat, one medium jacket, and 2 hoodies, maximum.
6. I should clean out my UnderThings -- I have an over abundance of underwear and many socks I don’t wear. I have previously considered replacing all of my socks with just the exact same pair in multiples so that matching them in the laundry would be easier.
7. Shoes. I have way more shoes than I need. I already stripped down quite a few, but I could do more. I should reduce my collection to 1 pair of sandals, 1 pair of flip flops, 2 pairs of work shoes, and 1 pair of running shoes.
I tend to wear a lot of the same stuff over and over, so I don’t think this will end up being much of a loss, in the long run. Guess we’ll find out!
