Have you heard of Captain Durag? He's a new black character in this Disney show that is causing a bit of a stir about how offensive he is or isn't and I would be interested in hearing your opinion on him

Important nuance because people have assumed otherwise, the person that created him is a black woman

After some digging, I've come to this opinion:

I think the wrong conversation is being held about it.

I don't think the existence of a character called Captain Durag, nor the design of him is offensive by itself. In fact, I quite like it in theory! Durags are a part of our culture, it's what many of us use to maintain the health of our hair. Having those things represented, especially in cartoons, helps us perceive them as something not to be ashamed of or be private about in spaces beyond our homes.

Having said that, my own problem with it is that the name doesn't really fit with what the character could do. I think it's a one off character, so it ultimately wouldn't matter that much, but still, from what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be incorporation with the Durag moniker with his powers, beyond using the durag as a cape to fly/glide.

Which, yeah I guess it's a kid's show, so whatever. But still! Wouldn't it be cool if his hair was part of his powers? Super hair that forms ropes out of dreads or braids! Afro hair sculpture that can turn into weapons or tools! Have his powers be directly correlated to proper hair care, treatment and health practices, so you can teach a real life lesson with hit!

idk, I'm spitballin here, but given that, yeah he was created by a Black woman, I think there's kind of a rush to jump to being critical of it. Not saying that Black characters created by Black people can't ever be criticized but, like with anything, the kind of criticism used and the way that it's given matters. And I think the the conversation should be more about making him more of an actual Captain Durag rather than what seems to be uh... Superman who happens to have a Durag. It's a good start, but there could be more!
