My More Obscure Fanfic

I got a kudos today on an old fic for a rare pairing, so I thought I’d put together a list of some of my fics for smaller or more obscure fandoms, ones that might take some time to find because they’re way down the bottom of my fandoms list on AO3.

Got a Gunmetal Shine (L.A. Confidential 1997)

A small Jack Vincennes/Ed Exley fanfic, because this is a tiny pairing, and I’m not sure why? Well, okay. Ed/Bud(/Lynn), I kind of get that one will win out, but there’s also the fact that Jack’s last scene was a message to Ed. So. I thought I’d give those boys some love?

Morning Truths (Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter 1974)

This is one of two fics for this fandom on AO3, which isn’t surprising because it’s one of the more obscure Hammer Horror vampire flicks of the 70s. But I really enjoyed the character of Hieronymus Grost, our hero’s hunchbacked sidekick, so here’s a warm little morning friendship moment.

A Wonderous Terror (RED 2010)

Again, Ivan/Victoria is such a tiny pairing, which baffles me because they were easily the most fantastic and adorable part of these movies. This is a tiny scene set after the first movie of Ivan musing adoringly at a still-wounded Victoria.

Old Strengths and New Weaknesses (Flash Gordon 1980)

This movie is a giant ball of 80s cheese riffing off 30s cheese, but I love it. So I wrote a fic about Princess Aura and Prince Barin, in the aftermath of the movie, struggling to deal with the changes two Earth heroes have wrought on their world and on them. Aura/Barin with hints of an OT4, because this is one of the most polyamorous movies I’ve ever seen.

This Time We Have (The Breed 2001)

Again, one of 4 fics total for this fandom on AO3, because this is an incredibly obscure vampire dystopia movie from the early oughts, but I wanted an OT3 fic between the main lead, his vampiric partner, and his vampiric love interest, about the fact that they both love him and he is, perhaps deeply inconveniently, immune to vampirism.

A Worthy Foe (The Valois Romances by Alexandre Dumas)

Not exactly Dumas’ most famous work, but I adore the character of Chicot, the jester to King Henri III of France. And the Comte de Bussy has an odd comment in the books where he notes that a friend of his ‘knows Chicot is a rough swordsman’ so be careful not to challenge him. This, from what is likely the best swordsman in the kingdom, and our hero. So … how did Bussy know?

The Love I Bear Thee (The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner)

Relius/Teleus became a much more popular pairing after the fifth book, but I’m somewhat proud that I saw it all the way back at the third, and that this was the first story for that pairing on AO3. On the subject of loves for whom one would forgive torture, and why.

Ka, Akh, Ren (The Mummy 1999/Highlander the Series)

This one is not a rare pair or fandom, as such, it’s just that since we’ve been talking about the Mummy recently I remembered that I wrote it. The Mummy crew meet a 5000 year old dead man, and after an initial round of bullets, it goes surprisingly well?

Choose Not Lethe & Never Strangers (Dark City 1998)

This movie has a pretty small but dedicated fanbase, and I deeply adore it. Two fics exploring the potential relationship between Dr. Screber and John Murdoch after the end of the movie, now that they are abruptly free and can focus on complications other than survival.

Love’s Weight in Knowing & Brightness Dwells (James Asher Vampire series by Barbara Hambly)

Again, not the most popular vampire series in the world, but such a good one. These were written after I think reading only the first two books? The first is James and Lydia struggling over their love for a monster and their wish that someone had been there to save his soul, and the second is Simon, said monster, struggling over his love for a pair of mortals and how very dangerous that love is to his sociopathic vampiric survival instinct.

Beneath the Skin (Magnificent Seven TV Series)

Not at all a rare fandom, but stories with Nathan and Ezra as the main relationship (even mostly platonically as in this case) are a bit thinner on the ground. A supernatural AU still set in the old West where Ezra, as a consequence of his itinerant gambler’s lifestyle, can play vampire hunter at a push, and Nathan, as a consequence of his background as a slave, has some darker secrets still.

… A fair few of my smaller fandoms are for vampire media, I’m noticing. And some of my AUs even for bigger media are also vampire related. Heh.
