There were 2 deaths aboard the Truong Xuan and 2 births - both baby girls. 1 was named after Clara - the ship that saved everyone. The other baby was born on the Truong Xuan named "Chieu-Anh" or Shining Light. Clara was listed as one day younger than me. I was incorrectly recorded as a boy on the refugee list in Hong Kong.
Overall, it was an incredible rescue at sea with the bravery of 2 captains. Captain Pham of the TX and Captain Olsen. The largest recorded escape by sea.
35 years later. A reunion with the captain of the Truong Xuan, Captain Pham. We all received a wonderful resolution award from the US Congress. I was selected as the symbol of the next generation of Vietnamese immigrants.
The Danish captain who had rescued us Martin Olsen had passed away but held onto the ship's instruments that Captain Pham passed onto him in gratitude. The widow returned the instruments 35 years later to its original owner. It happened at another reunion in Sydney, Australia where 200 of the survivors settled there.
