It’s time for us to face the fact that in the story of Julian Bashir’s life, Garak fills the role of Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
But I'm not Free of You. I Love You.
"You don't love me," Villain said, and he whispered something, allowing a spell to glow in his hand. "You see this? This is what you felt, and in my presence, I was the only one you could transfer those feelings towards." The glow dissipated.
Hero took a shaky breath. "I know. I know, but...but you still pretended to love me."
"It would be a ridiculous plan of mine to make you love me without returning the favour. The plan would have fallen through."
"You're not understanding me," Hero said.
"Because you haven't explained anything." Villain shrugged. "You're angry. I'm guessing I crossed a boundary. I'm a monster for doing this to you. Emotions and feelings are a private matter. Yah, yah, yah."
Hero shook her head. "No." She reached for Villain's hands- which he didn't pull away. "It's none of that. I mean, I-I agree that it was wrong, but...but I like to believe it. I know it's not real, but I'd have never known if you didn't tell me. I still don't believe it."
"You think I really love you?" Villain's brows lifted.
In turn, Hero nodded. She liked the feeling of being loved. Of course, anyone else who ever came to love her would suffice, but Hero liked the way Villain loved her- like he didn't have to, but he wanted to.
Villain's spell would work without his acting. He didn't have to continue holding Hero's hands now. He didn't have to kiss the top of her head when they sat on the couch together. He didn't have to draw patterns on the back of her neck with a finger. But he did, and Hero loved it.
In truth, Villain only continued to stand in his place, holding the Hero's hands because he was in somewhat of a shock. He was frozen at hearing Hero's thoughts. She really thought Villain loved her.
"What do you want out of this?"
"You tell me," Hero said. "You're the one that dropped the spell. Why'd you do it?"
Why did he do it? He didn't love Hero. He knew that, even if she didn't. So, why did he drop the spell? "I was bored," he told her.
"Is that true?"
Finally, he dropped her hands. "It's what I said, isn't it?"
"It's what you said. I don't think it's what you believe."
"You don't love me." He said it more to himself than Hero. She didn't love him. She didn't, so what right did she have to say he might love her? "Leave, alright? You're free. Free from the spell, free from my home, free from me. Go."
"But I'm not free of you. Villain, I love you. I love you and I want to stay."
The spell was still working. It had to have been.
"Even if you don't think you love me back, I think you do, and I want to continue believing that. So let me stay. We'll go out- we'll make it less boring."
"Hero..."
"Please." Desperate. "Please let this mean something."
"I don't-"
"You don't think you do."
Villain shook his head with a sigh. He couldn't win this fight, could he? Not with Hero begging the way she was. He'd felt somewhat guilty about the love spell, hence why he dropped it, but now...Hero wasn't even under the influence of the spell. She was herself and she was admitting to loving him.
He whispered words into his palm, bringing the glow forth once again.
"It's not necessary," Hero said, "but I won't object if it's what will convince you to let me be with you."
She knew the test he was presenting, and she passed it. Villain dropped the glow- quite literally- to the floor where it settled in, shifting through the tiny cracks of the floor.
"Let's try this again," he said. "Properly."
