The Everdeen family comes outside to help bring all the baby supplies into the house. Mr. Everdeen doesn’t say much, and Peeta doesn’t stay very long, kissing Katniss goodbye and telling her he’ll pick her up for work in the morning. Up in Katniss’s room, Prim coos over all the tiny socks, and Mrs. Everdeen comments on how much she likes the brand of carrier they were given. Katniss sits on her bed, rubbing her bump and watching them, but her mind is distracted by the rift between her father and her baby’s. Leaving her mother and sister to sort through the presents, she meanders slowly to the kitchen, makes herself some tea, and takes it to the back porch swing. 

With only two months until the baby arrives, Katniss and Peeta get some unexpected gifts.

Prompt: How do Peeta and Haymitch decide on Peeta's interview strategy for the 74th Games? :)

The boy doesn’t give me much to decide on, and for that, I’m glad.

There’s a long pause after I ask, “So, what kind of strategy do you think you want to use for tomorrow?” in which he looks at the floor, his knee bobbing up and down. At least he’s taking it more seriously than the girl.

Finally he looks up at me and says, “Did you know that I’ve had a crush on her since I was five?” Then he laughs, almost bitterly.

The admission nearly makes me choke on my drink. “What?” I set the glass down completely, not trusting myself to hear any more of this with it.

It’s a good lie if I’ve ever heard one. Could work for a lot of sponsors. The idea pretty unprecedented, love in the Games. But young, unrequited love? That wouldn’t work, it’s too sad... But, the Games are always sad in one way or another. It’s the whole dashed hopes thing. This... This might be the perfect way to win the public over on both of them.

And the girl could use all the help she could get.

For that ask game because I have to know: First We Feast and Housebroken

So with Housebroken, it was the scene when she’s first “reaped” into Peeta and Madge’s service. I had kinda played that out in my head several (dozens?) of times before putting pen to paper. 

I thiiiink the first scene that popped into my mind for First We Feast was a more vague concept of being kept in his room and protected from his family.

A very calming scent for me. I lived near a library as a kid and it was the smallest branch so the scent of old books hit once you walked in.

My pipe dream is to open a bookshop in San Francisco, but it would also be a boba cafe.

“Uh-oh,” Cary laughs sweetly. “So serious. Don’t tell me you’re pregnant.” Her husband laughs with her, but neither Katniss nor Peeta can muster even a snort to save face. Cary’s smile falls abruptly, like paint sloughed off a canvas with a pallet knife. “Katniss,” she says, all levity gone, “tell us you’re not pregnant.”

Knowing the clock is ticking, Katniss and Peeta finally break the news to her mother and father — and face the consequences.

You can thank @captainseaweedbrains for the speed with which this chapter was released: she and I actually wrote most of it months ago, in a back and forth chat! The next chapter might take a little more time, but it’ll be worth the wait!
